Re #123: It won't work because what's going on isn't debate, it's
evangelizing. The 'guns for everyone' types wouldn't be interested in
preaching to the choir in a gun conference.

Probably not only the choir would join the conference, but I don't see
that this would keep gun items out of Agora. Evangelical types
generally want the largest possible audience, and Agora is where that is
and is likely to remain.
But be that as it may, I interpret Michael's resp:108 as "I withdraw the
proposal." However, if somebody else wants to propose a gun conference,
they certainly can.
Our practice has been to create a conference if:
(1) Somebody proposes it.
(2) There's been a few days allowed (usually 5 or so) to discuss it.
(3) After the discussion period, the proposer still wants it.
(4) Somebody volunteers to fairwitness it.
If all the above conditions are met, the conference is created. If any
one of them isn't, it's not. I think we should stick to that policy.
With respect to the gun conference, we had (1) for a while, but I don't
think we have it anymore. So far we haven't had (4). This could change.
If people genuinely want a place to discuss guns, they should certainly
have it. I seem to remember that years ago there was a guns conference
on M-Net that was quite active. But on M-Net at that time, there was a
sizeable group of users who were gun hobbyists, including Mike Myers,
the original owner.
As far as using a gun conference to control the content of Agora is
concerned, I don't think it'd work. Like I said, evangelical types go
hunting where the ducks are. Anyway, fads like gun control items tend to
be temporary and fade away on their own if left be. Conferencing tends
to be like the weather -- changeable and hard to control. I'll note that
at this writing, fall Agora has been up for over a week and contains no
gun items at all.

You're right, John, I did mean #108 as withdrawing
the proposal. The gun control items in the Summer
Agora cf remain forgotten, and I haven't seen a new
gun item in Fall yet.

After some responses in item 152, and some e-mail, I'm officially
proposing the Decorum confernnce. I'm also going to start a new
item to discuss Decorum. It should be #153.
Note as things stand now, there would actually be three new conferences:
Decorum, Decorum-Archive, and Cutting-room-floor.

You might take a look at the Intro conference. It too was set up to keep
newbies from being overwhelmed by agora, and all the inactive conferences.
It died. Might want to find out why.

I would like to propose setting up a new conference for the purpose
of discussing the problems present when using email for advocacy
with elected officials specifically the problem of the emails being
ignored and thereby jeopardizing the success of an advocacy campaign.
There has been some media coverage about this recently.
There are also some reports and surveys on this by the Congress
Online Project and OMBWATCH.(I will provide the URLs in future
posts or will give it to anyone requesting it by email.)
I am new to GREX and am not sure I will ultimately decide I wan't it
here because I find the Conferencing system a bit confusing, and I
would like to invite alot of people who are new to GREX to come
here and participate, and they might also find the system to be too
confusing.

I would like to have people from outside of GREX also use the
conference, and they will have trouble finding the info in Agora.

Posting an item in Agora and seeing what kind of response it generates is
a good way to gauge whether there is sufficient interest in the topic to
support a new conference.

Even if there is not a big interest shown in Agora, I would still want
to start it, because I would publicize it on many places outside of GREX
and bring in participants to the conference.
Also, in response to a previous question about wether there is a need
for a seperate conference for this, I have thought about the possibility
of starting it out as a seperate conference and later on moving it into
another broader category conference like the politics conference
or broadening the scope of the conference and renaming it.

I don't see any problem with starting a conference for this. It may end up
dying a lonely death, but that's no reason not to try it in the first place.

Heh, Some of us FWs have conferences that are severely inactive, not dead.
I just KNOW that the Food Coop people would flock here if I only had a
separate conference for them ;-)

Regarding my request for a conference about 'email advocacy':
I am not yet ready to make a final decision yet to start it,and need
some time to sort some things out related to this.
I am not sure how much time I need to decide,but will try to post
again about this as soon as possible.
