Did talk to several siblings this morning. But no visits, no gathering
for family meal. A couple are down in Texas, one is further away from
the rest of us up on Mt. Clemens, while another has gone into hiding.

No pre-Christmas gathering with SF-convention family either.

Did you get to visit your mother this weekend?
My closest relatively geographically is in Rochester NY. I invited three
neighbors over to a potluck and one had to visit his mother but the others
came and we feasted on food mostly give us by the absent fourth, who
volunteers at a food donation center and takes home leftovers there. We had
restaurant-made soup, cheese sauce on organic-whole-grain-linguine, broccoli,
neighbor's pickles, pumpkin pie with oatmeal crust (a friend keeps sending
me what he thinks are expired cans, this one marked use by 2007), and juice
left by a band, and wine. Both my guests had something in common - they both
drink wine and coffee. The moral, don't feel lonely on a holiday, invite
someone over who you think might feel lonely. The absent fourth stopped over
just before everyone else to make sure I did not want him to deliver a whole
cooked dinner - I said wait a few days.

My fiance and I have reversed the end of our wedding plans, and decided
to go ahead and get married on January 21. (I know, the Bummed item is
a weird place for this kind of announcement.)

re resp:11: Her daughter had one spinal surgery a few days ago which was
a diagnosis and a little initial treatment. She is tentatively having
another surgery on January 13. I am not too familiar with the details,
but we are all hoping for the best. Thanks for asking.

Although *I* made it to Michigan, my luggage (and the Christmas
gifts contained therein) did not. Hopefully one of the airlines
involved will locate it. The presents can be replaced but if I
have to replace the clothes it'll be costly and time-consuming
and it's going to put a crimp in my winter vacation if I don't
have an outdoor jacket or any other form of winter clothing.

That's crummy, Mike! I'll go dumpster dive behind SEATAC's Alaska commercial
dumpsters and look. What color are the suitcases?

Ugh. I have been really lucky in the luggage department. I have lost my
luggage twice and both times were over 20 years ago when I was a
teenager. But I am always a little paranoid about it and make sure to
pack a couple of days worth of clothes into my carry on bag. Which
means, I often dont have room for the stuff I would actually like to
have with me on the plane.

Anyhow, both times the airlines lost my luggage, they found the luggage
after a couple of days and returned it to me fairly quickly. I hope for
a similar outcome for you.

Can't recall having ever lost any luggage on a plane, but an airline
once lost my sister's dog. She put the dog in one of those pet
containers, and it flew up in the luggage area (dog was too big to get
carried on) Anyway the plane landed at the airport, and there was no
dog. At first they claimed the dog/container was never loaded on the
plane, but later it came out that the airport luggage people forgot
where the dog was supposed to de-plane and the dog stayed on the plane
to the next stop. Had to catch another later plane back. The dog was
terrified by the time he got there.

Poor bugger. I've had luggage delayed after being on a plane before.

resp:23 Oh man, that is terrible. I could handle it if my luggage got
lost but I would seriously freak out if my dog got lost by an airline.

The summer before last when my nephew Ramsey came to visit, his
luggage was mistakenly sent to one of the cruise ship lines, who
loaded it aboard their vessel and sailed off with it. Although
they were eventually reunited, we had to buy him new clothes for
the trip and his luggage (which made it all the way up the Inside
Passage to Skagway) got to see more of Alaska than he did.

IBB I have a nasty cold right now. At the moment I am grateful for the
wonderful people who invented kleenex and dayquil. I want this day to
be over so I can go home and crawl under the covers for the next two
days. Oh and I also want to get my nose amputated.

I've had good luck chasing colds away with multiple shots of whiskey,
possibly with lemon or honey, and huddling under the covers in a
slightly overheated room overnight.

I got home from work and did the dishes. My wife just finished chewing me
out for my inconsideration because the activity woke her granddaughter
[8:30am]. As a third shifter, uninterrupted sleep doesn't exist for me and
the dream that it might return evaporated decades ago. i guess that i'm just
bummed that she took the liberty to dump the blame on me, rather than consider
the possibility that the granddaughter already slept a few hours beyond her
regular time to get up.

Scourge me: I'm certain that I deserve it.

Third shift work is tough as you're always bucking the majority. It
takes a special person to adapt for the long haul.
