I've been seeing a lot more Hawaii plates in the past few months. How does
one drive from Hawaii to the mainland US? That would be one hell of a long
ferry trip.

People probably have their cars shipped, and fly to the US separately. Also,
some states (Michigan, for example) don't ask to see the car before licensing
it, so it may be possible to keep Hawaii registered cars on the Mainland US
for quite a while.
I was very tempted to keep my Michigan registration to avoid dealing with
California's DMV, even though the car will likely never be in Michigan again.
Judging by the number of Michigan plates I see around here, a lot of people
probably are doing that.
