Yeah, towings was a reach. But if "a towing" is a single act of "towing away
a car", then it can be pluralized, if one dares. :-)

"tow" is both a verb and a noun. As a verb, it has a present participle
"towing", which does not have a plural. As a noun, it has a gerund, also
"towing", which is a verbal noun, which can be made plural. "Towings" is
the plural of the gerund towing, based on the noun tow.

Hmmm...well stupid can be noun (a stupid person), so I guess
it can be plural.

In "a stupid person", stupid is an adjective, not a noun. The plural
of "stupid person" is "stupid persons". Adjectives cannot be pluralized.
Some words are either a noun or an adjective (e.g., red), and could
be made plural if used as a noun, but not as an adjective.

Yabut Deep Purple had the following lyrics from the "Smoke on the Water" cut
on its "Machine Head" album: "...some stupid with a flare gun, burned the
place to the ground..." And if you can't trust Deep Purple, who *can* you
trust?! ;-)

Mia culpa: I just looked it up and find that "stupid" is also a noun (=
blockhead, etc), and this in a rather old dictionary. It's not just a
proper noun (Hey! Stupid!).

m-w lists it only as an adjective, unless I missed something.

It's also a noun in the F&W College Standard Dict.

Re 1149: "a stupid person" is the definition of "stupid" the noun,
not an example of its usage. Relax.

Re 1153: the noun definition of "stupid" is on the www.m-w.com site
as the second defn. I looked it up before I scored it.
