I go cd shopping (usually with Ken) once or twice a month, but
I often buy 4-5 cd's each time I shop. It varies pretty
widely, though. You'd be amazed at how much Ken groans when
I buy several cd's at once, as if he wasn't an even huger
consumer of the little discs!

He's groaning because it means he'll have to fight you for stereo time..

Tonight I got one of those lessons on why I buy interesting CDs on sight --
I've been trying to be good lately. The East Lansing Where House failed
to restock the Matthew Sweet album. They also sold out of their sole copy
of the Crash Test Dummies album, and they swept out the entire stock of
import cutouts which included a New Zealand edition of the current
Straightjacket Fits album. Sigh.So much for cheap payday thrills.

Tower's got a big sale on discounted back-catalog rock/pop/jazz recordings.
All stuff normally priced $8.99 - $11.99 is marked down to $8.99 or 3/$25.
This includes Sony/Columbia's "Nice Price" series and a lot of equivalent
lines from other manufacturers; there are also a lot of nice jazz reissues
in this price range. Leslie & I picked up "Chicago's Greatest Hits",
"Jim Croce's Greatest Hits", and Billy Bragg's "Back to Basics".

Yeah, I picked up PIL's "Compact Disc", Richard Thompson's "Amnesia",
and Syd Straw's "Surprise".. Anyone care to guess what these discs
have in common?

I used to be in the three-a-week habit for awhile, but currently I'm
'between technologies', ie I have a tape player but I want a CD player, so I
can't decide wether to buy CD or tape. Most of the CDs that I want are so
bizarre or imported as to be prohibitively expensive! Like the Jean-Michel
Jarre album "Revolutions" -- I bought it on tape which got chewed up recently.
The tape cost $12, and I went to see if I could find it on CD -- $22, cheapest
price!
Anyone know where I can find it? [:)

Hmm.. I know of a couple places but not nearby.. For some reason
I don't quite understand, the entire J-M Jarre catalogue was deleted
in the U.S a few years ago.

musicland of all placed has the Jarre one for $22. So, sounds like I should
just go back there and drag out my bucks?

CDs on the Shanachie label are on sale at Tower for $11.99 through
St. Patrick's Day. Besides their collection of Celtic folk & folk rock,
Shanachie also has a lot of reggae and some African pop.

Though I only own a few albums on Shanachie, I always thought the
mix of music they put out was neat.. Definitely unusual..

Tower has some in-store coupons over near the CD-singles. $13.99 - $14.99
rock/pop items marked down to $11.99. I'm not sure you can use more than
one of them on a trip.
Some of the wreckage from the Rough Trade bankruptcy has surfaced at
Schoolkids: I picked up Jonathan Segel's "Storytelling" and Straightjacket
Fits' "Melt" for $9 each over the last week. They've got a few other items.
This could be "last call" for some of them.

Mike, could you tell us how to get to that CD shop you like in Grand Rapids?
I think it's Vinyl Solution. I may have a shot at getting out there soon.

Well, assuming you're coming from the direction of Lansing
(i.e., coming into Grand Rapids from the east) get off on
28th Street headed west (exit 42A, I think..) and proceed several
miles along GR's shopping strip.
Unfortunately, this is where my directions become hazy, since
I don't know the street names to use as landmarks.. Vinyl Solution
(the store in question) is probably 1 1/2 miles past Woodward
and Eastbrook Malls (which are at 28th St. and E. Belt Line) and
will be found in a strip mall on the north hand side of the road.
It has a fairly decent sized sign. Look for the strip mall soon
after going under a (railroad, I think) bridge about 2 or 3 blocks
past where Burton (or is it Breton? GR has both, and they run
perpendicular to one another) intersects 28th St. (in any case,
only one of them intersects 28th..) If you hit another freeway
(in this case, US 131) you've gone too far.
It's not that hard to find, really, and if you get on 28th Street
and stop and call them they'll be able to give you much, much
better directions.. Just look for Vinyl Solution in the phone book..

I visited MAD's records in Ardmore, PA a few weeks ago, while I was
visiting my new niece. It's a pretty cool record store, and krj
and I usually go there when we're in Philly. Their folk selection
is quite extensive.
