One of the modems is doing the "connect and then hang" thing again. I'm
guessing it's 3554, since 4 people were on before me.

I had the same problem just now. I dialed in on 3000, but don't know 'zactly
which modem it would be.

I went and played with modems today. I think our modem-with-no-prompt is a
flaky port on the terminal server.

Been that way since 10AM. I also got a call from a dialin user, who's
getting an immediate 'no carrier' right after 'connected 2400'.

I'm having trouble with the dialins, both -3000 and -5041. I get
kicked off just as soon as I logged in. It is annoying to say the least
because I cannot access the walk.schedule thingie from backtalk.

Don't know what you're referring to omni. But any *file* that's publicly
readable can be made publicly *web* readable for use with backtalk.

It isn't on purpose, Tim. I think Ameritech is having general

the screen but grex did not respond. Hung up and redialed a few times before
I could get through.

I think your right. My Ann Arbor office phone went out on me this
afternoon. The service people I called (from a different phone) called my
number and got an "all circuits busy." Minutes later, the dial tone
magically reappeared. It was very strange, and unlike any phone problem
I've had before.

I just had the same problem as Keesan. The little LCD display on my modem
said Quality Low and Carrier 1200 even though I had connected at 14.4.
Noise on the line making it negotiate a lower speed? Then it disconnected.

I had the same problem of no dial tone. Jim had me unplug and replug the
fax-phone switch a few times, which did not help. Glad to know it was the
phone company and not my mess of phone equipment.

The Ann Arbor Main 5ESS switch, which serves most of the phone lines in Ann
Arbor, got changed sometime in the last few days, such that it no longer gives
busy signals that are detectable by modems. If Grex's lines get busy, they
are likely to look to your modem as if they're doing the ring no answer thing.

Calling Grex tonight I heard a noise I have *never* heard before.
It sounded a little bit like a screaming rasping noise. I have heard
many many forms of signals across phone lines and this wasn't like
anything I have ever heard. After about 10 seconds of this (I couldn't
bear to put the phone down) I was abrupty hung up on after that. The
next call I made went through just fine.

Does anyone know why the phone is now asking me to leave my name and number
if I get a busy signal or no answer after five rings. In the former case it
tells me there will be a 75 cent charge for the receiver, what about the
latter case? Is this advertising for caller id service? It is annoying.

No, that's something else. It's a variant of what I was referring to in
response 120. Are you on the 1A switch, instead of the 5ESS? The message
the 5ESS switch gives now is:
"Let repeat dialing call you back when this line is free. To activate for 75
cents, press 3. No additional charge to repeat dialing subscribers. If you
are calling from a rotary phone please hang up and dial 1166."
The area of Ann Arbor that's served by the 5ESS also has a few exchanges
served by a 1A (Lucent/ATT analog) switch (734 662, 663, 665, 668 and 669).
I suspect the 1A may not have the feature to actually call you back when the
line is free, and may therefore instead use something voicemail like such as
what Sindi described.
Somebody on a mailing list I'm on mentioned that on DMS 100 switches (for
example, the switch in SouthEast Ann Arbor which handles 734 677, 971, 973,
975, etc., the repeat dialing message can be disabled by dialing *08. That
doesn't seem to work on the 5ESS. Perhaps there's another command that will
work?
