sorry Jared, when you said you were sharijng your ISDN lines with
grex I just assumed you meant Nether, since that is the place you
run.

Grex's ISDN connection goes through Dorian. It doesn't go through
Nether in any way. I don't know if or how Nether gets a connection
these days. It used to be through CIC-Net and may well be through
Dorian in the future. I don't think Nether's occasional reliability
problems have ever had to do with its connection. My impression is that
it simply has a smaller part-time staff than Grex dies, and when
something breaks they aren't always able to respond even as quickly as
we do (which isn't always very fast).

Thanks to everybody who keeps this system functional. I read the above
comments so I get some picture of how much work it takes. Again,
thanks.

I second that thanks. You folks may not always "respond quickly", but
amazingly often you interupt your private lives to do just that.

For all your cold suppers and unfinished socializing, for all your short
nights and long days, we thank you!

Extra hint on the modems: When you connect, wait a bit. it can take a couple
seconds up to a minute for Grex to actually make the telnet connection and
display something. Hitting keys won't help, either.

Aside from that, and from the telnet queue xeing constantly full, I think the
modems are now working pretty well. I've got a preliminary version of a
congfig for the rest of the modems now, too.

Grex went down late Friday night so we could do a few things to it.

  - The swap disk (the disk where programs in memory go to when
there isn't room for them anymore) had a problem with it. We verified
that it indeed have a bad spot on it, which crashed Grex when more
than 50M of swap space was used. Noting that there weren't any bad
spots beyond the 50M point in the disk, we made a different partition
on the disk that started just after the bad spot on the disk, thus
making a 250M swap partiton, as opposed to the older 300M partition.

  - We added another 32M memory card, to test the idea that the
system might be able to deal with more memory now that the possibly
"evil" ALM-2 serial card is gone.

ITs been 12 hours and we haven't crashed froma hardware problem
yet. Too early to tell really, but it is encouraging.
