Cool. Thanks, Jan!

Is the new version up on your web site yet? We're running your write stuff

Valerie, bring back the molasses. It's the cookies you're supposed to munch!

Re 97: In general, very good and useful changes. What if someone wants a
different helper and only knows to type 'write help' or 'tel help'? I
admit that's unlikely (that they wouldn't know to 'write <specific person>',
but it's possible with new users.

(Maybe Kent's not in agora. This is a linked item.)

(Very true - robh *certainly* isn't in Agora, for instance.)

Generally, when I've gotten a helper who wanted to talk to another
helper instead, they just asked me "how do I talk to so-and-so",
I told them, they thanked me and went on their merry way. (Unless
the person they wanted to talk to wasn't currently on-line, of course.)

escaping from a help chat simply has been the invocation of !mesg N and
then mesg y in a few seconds to reset the help flag... didnt knw
that was a problem <?>.

i am very glad to see .nowrite files available and some of
the other enhancements.

response 111 of 172: Mark Unseen   Feb 11 16:56 UTC 1997

Instead of doing "!mesg N" and then "mesg y" to disconnect a helper, you can
just do "!mesg d" which disconnects people but doesn't turn off your message
permissions, but that's not really the issue here, and anyway, it's better
to explain to the user about control-D so they know what to do in the future.

I admit I've had helpers I'd have been happy to "lose" to another helper.
But most of the time, I can help a person the second time much faster than
another person could. Even if it isn't the same problem, I may by then know
what terminal and shell they are using, and what level of sophistication
they are at. On the whole, I think this is better. And hey, if a helpee
really drives you looney, you can stick him in your .nowrite file for a bit.

Voting has begun on a motion to allow unregistered users (i.e.
people without Grex login id's) read-only access to conferences
via the World Wide Web. Type vote at a Unix shell prompt or
!vote at a bbs or menu prompt for the exact wording of the
motion or to cast a ballot. The polls will close at the end of
the day (Eastern Standard Time) on February 21. See also Item
27 in the Coop conference for the discussion leading up to the
motion.

(I still can't believe Grex has evolved to where we
have to have a vote to *allow* this to happen.)
(How sad.)

response 114 of 172: Mark Unseen   Feb 12 00:24 UTC 1997

(A larger and more diverse Grex community means more dissensus, hence
more motions, etc.)

response 115 of 172: Mark Unseen   Feb 12 01:10 UTC 1997

(But, to have the privilidge to read conferences, I think one should
first run newuser and see what Grex is about. If somebody is reading
things I post, I would rather know that it is somebody who is listed in
/etc/passwd, rather than just "some other person on the internet.")

response 116 of 172: Mark Unseen   Feb 12 02:27 UTC 1997

The problem with that is, why would they care to come to GREX and find out
what we're about? A peek at the conferences may mean that more of the people
coming to GREX care about conferencing rather than just wanting "free emial".

<remmers humbly suggests that those wishing to discuss this do
so in a new item or in Coop item 27 rather than in the
 "Announcements about Grex" item.>

response 118 of 172: Mark Unseen   Feb 12 03:09 UTC 1997

Sure, but what if Grex confs were indexed by search engines like web
crawler? Do you know how many "spiders" would be sent out to Grex's web
pages? And, there is only so much data Grex can pump thru it's 'lil
28.8 at a time. [OK, I'll stop discussing this in Agora.]

Ryan -- it would be set up so that search engines wouldn't index it.

response 121 of 172: Mark Unseen   Feb 12 16:22 UTC 1997

Back to the actual Grex announcements: I've renamed "newlynx" to
"lynx", and the old "lynx" is now "oldlynx", on the off chance that
anyone would rather use that version. The new version is better at
handling frames, refresh pointers, and various others "advanced"
HTML features that so many Web pages use these days. If there are
any problems, please let staff know!
