For folks interested in the rationale behind the change or who
want input into it, there's a discussion item in the Garage
conference. Most people won't even be aware of the change when
it happens (except that they might notice that the system seems
somewhat faster), unless they run scripts in which their home
directory is hard-coded.

Yup. Assuming all goes right, I'd question Valerie's statement that "the
change is going to have a big effect on a lot of people". On some, certainly,
and including some who won't see it anywhere except (if we're lucky) in the
MOTD. But there's also the definite possibility that all *won't* go right,
a *big* reason to announce it very loudly.

With 14000 users, even 1% of our users is "a lot of people".

People who have ITD login accounts and IFS space at the University of
Michigan should be used to this type of system. I imagine it was used
there for exactly the same reason (except 30K+ users instead of 14K).
I use that account as well and the directory structure is not a problem,
although there really wasn't anything to compare to for most people there
(they've had it all along). Letting everyone here know (via the MOTD,
I presume) would be a Good Thing, since it *is* a significant change,
and the user has a basis for comparison.

it might be worth considering (slightly anyway) that this is enough
of an alteration that little batches of email get sent to *every*
login .. in little batches, just little batches.
i agree that this change will be a GoodThing and also that advance
notice is a BetterThing .. and also that there might be value in
little batches of email being sent.
i would suspect that dealing with questions *before* a change of
this magnitude would prove better than questions *after*.

Hopefully, this change will be invisible to almost all users, except for the
ones who write their own scripts and config files -- a small minority. I
don't think we need to send out 14,000 e-mail messages to announce it.
Re 103: Kent! Welcome back! (By the way, there was a note about hierarchical
/home in the motd until yesterday, when I replaced it with the note about the
link fundraiser. I'm thinking to put the motd note back again about a week
before the chanegover actually happens.)

I agree with Valerie that email to every user would be largely a waste of
resources. 95% of them wouldn't understand what we were talking about.
98% wouldn't be affected.
I thought we were going to do hierarchical conversion RSN.

Yup, I expect so. But the actual date for switching to hierarchical /home
hasn't been selected yet. I'd guess it'll be another few weeks before it
happens.

I was around when they made that switch at CAEN, and it was not noticeable
there, so I don't expect it to be noticeable here. The people who need to
know will understand. THe ones who don't understand won't need to know. I
hope the data transfer goes well.

General rule about the change - if you have no idea what any of it
means, then you won't notice the change.

The idea is that you have a home directory now, called /home/kewy. After the
change, your home directory will be renamed to /home/k/e/kewy instead. And
hopefully the system will run a bit faster. All your files will be moved to
your new home directory for you; you won't have to do anything.

I've installed a new version of the Backtalk interpretor and the
Pistachio interface. The most obvious changes:
- Fairwitnesses can now define the backgroud/text/link colors in their
conferences, so not all conferences need be green any more.
- Fairwitnesses can edit the login screens via backtalk.
- By default, no frames will be used on Grex. Now if you want to use
the frames version of Pistachio, you have to turn the option on
explicitly.

The Badktalk interface is available at
http://www.cyberspace.org/backtalk.html
It is pretty self-documenting. Which is a good thing, because there isn't
much documentation. You can find some information about it at
http://www.izzy.net/~janc/backtalk.html

How about producing one line synopses of each item in an index? That stuff
is very verbose.

We replaced one potentially flaky memory card with another potentially flaky

I've uploaded the Agora 10 conference, from way back when. If you're
interested, you can reach it with "join agora10". I still intend to upload
Agoras 11 and 12. After that, all Agoras that aren't lost will be on-line.
We're still missing agoras 3 and 7, if anybody out there has a backup.
