So, why not make mail a *little* less convenient on grex, especially to
limit the heaviest users (in bytes/day), even if only by postponing their
mail handling to less loaded times?

That reminds me - someone asked me if mail addressed on grex to a grex
user is handled any differently if addressed (in mail or pine) just
userid, or userid@cyberspae.org?

(You need to register cyberspae.org too, for the middle finger disabled.)
Let me extend the question - does internal mail use any external resources,
addressed either way?

When you send mail on Grex using pine or something like that, pine runs
sendmail to send the message. Sendmail looks at the hostname (the part after
the @ sign) and checks to see if that's a host it accepts mail for. If it
is, it checks for an alias in /etc/aliases. If it doesn't find one, it checks
for a .forward file in the user's home directory. If it doesn't find a
.forward, it passes the message to mail.local for delivery. If it is not a
host it accepts mail for, it sends it off to whatever the best MX for that
host is.

If you don't specify a domain name, sendmail generally appends the local
domain before doing anything else with it. So if you send mail without a
domain name on Grex, it will tack @grex.cyberspace.org onto it.

Sorry, party is not web accessible. You gotta telnet. Maybe someday we'll
do a web interface to party. Probalby not soon.

Try typing telnet://cyberspace.org as the url to netscape. There may be
a telnet client hooked up to netscape without your knowledge.

When I get a help request, I generally say, "Hi, what's up?" It seems to be
universally translatable, since I've had no problems being understood by those
who're not fluent in English. *Shrug*

If you are using winNT/win95, it may include telnet.exe file. you run
this program and then U can connect the server. telnet.exe is client
software.

WOW.
Nothing in here since last year? Are the helpers gone? Have we been
abandoned(ms?) I am going to help when I can. I have to admit I am
more UNIX savvy then Grex and like davel('96) above I know nothing
about party. Yes I'll have to try it, but not today.

Until then...

I just came on board by suggestion in the Co-Op conference.

Valerie-- what about the idea of a FAQ, say, in the menu system?

I'll see how things go. I'm glad to see I know enough of the basics.
I'm not sure how I can advertise the fact that I speak Spanish, but it
was part of my idea to become available to Spanish speaking users.

We still have helpers, though perhaps not so many as before.

As for the quietness of this conference...to be honest, I only just
found out about it today and I thought I was subscribed to almost
every conference on the system!

Today for the first time I had to turn off my helper flag because one
particular user decided to write me three times in succession, asking perhaps
two constructive questions (out of at least ten total). When I didn't answer
the last time he (or she; I can't tell) started filling up my screen (just by
typing random keys and pressing Enter); I had to use mesg N (twice).

I had another case of someone connecting, refusing to ask a question, and then
flooding my screen when I tried to remind him or her of the purpose. Had to
disconnect, forcibly ("mesg N") disconnect the other party, and unset my helper
flag. I don't like having to do that.

I had two help requests from someone asking for information about how to get
into other people's computers without their permission. (Since I don't *have*
any such information, I told him I wouldn't tell him/her if I knew.) That
person's loginid is in a 000-permitted file (called "temp_account") in my home
directory at the moment.
