oops, that's right; I'd agreed to send mail to sidhe about the twit filter.
Now that my acct. is functioning again, I'll do that.

re # 96 who asked you anyway. I didn't say anything as mean spirited
tp Sidhe as you said in response # 96. I will confront people who want
to institute censorship in our communw3w3{{ regardlesslr{{w3 {line noise}

I found this info on "twit filters" in our handy info conf:
Item 72: Is there a "twit filter" in the back cupboard somewhere?
Entered by M. T. Anslin (mta) on Sun, Sep 12, 1993 (19:39):
Does GREX have a filter so that I can screen responses and items
entered by particular users who seldom contribute meaningfully
and *really* get on my nerves?
If so, what is it and how do I use it?

#1 of 16: by John H. Remmers (remmers) on Sun, Sep 12, 1993 (20:48):
Yes, it's called "skip". Here are instructions on how to use it,
adapted from the source file:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
* This program can be used as a PicoSpan pager to eliminate
* responses and items by twits.
* It requires the use of special rseps and iseps that put a "!user\n"
* before each response. Then just use this program by putting the
* following lines into your .cfonce file:
define rsep "!%l\n----\n#%r %a (%l):"
define isep "!%l\nItem %i entered %d by %a (%l)\n %h"
define ishort "!%l\n %3i %h (%l)"
define pager "skip moron bozo etc"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The program was written by Jon Zeeff.
If you normally use the "more" pager to pause output when the screen
fills, you can combine the effect of that and "skip" by doing
define pager "skip moron bozo remmers | more"
Guess who's gonig to be the first on my list if she doesn't apolagize to
{me? {_Sidhe this should be the information you need to tell people in
your sympathy conf how to filter their responses.

(to add to the above: for some reason, the filter is now called "twit"
instead of "skip.")
By the way, she's last on my list. :)

Selena and raven, could you please take personal attacks and gripes to
e-mail? I think there's already enough antagonism here.

"skip" and "twit" are the same program. I'd thought Grex changed the name
from "twit" to "skip" a long time ago, choosing a preference for the less
emotionally charged word. Didn't know "twit" was available again....

that's strange. I vaguely remember having problems initially when trying
to use "skip", and was told to use "twit".
this really brings back memories!

Ajax- quite true, no response was given, but I frankly don't see it
coming. I would expect that if this was the kind of controversy that was
stirred up by the mere entrance of this item, that it would wind up as
being much worse should such a thing become existant. I refuse to
possibly put anyone who would come to that Sympathy for shelter through
that "trial by fire" which it, undoubtedly, would be.
Raven- thank you for digging that up.. Carson has also mailed me
the info, and I have stoed it to a file, so that I can put it in the
opening to Sympathy Lite <my term.. just call it Sympathy in the official
logs>. Interesting.. now that this has boiled through we now have dug up
for public consumption the twit filter, usable in any picospan cf..
I'm afraid that this might have a much greater affect on how the
future of grex goes than what I had originally proposed.. People ignoring
each other outright, on every cf.. on Sympathy, there was a good excuse,
but it could really lend to some strangness on such cf's as Agora, coop,
sexuality.. the list goes on. Well, we shall see as time passes.. that is
all we may ever do..
Raven, I agree with you that selena flew offf the proverbial handle,
but perhaps this is some indication of how you were coming off to others?
I may have listened much more closely to your input, hadyou gone
to the trouble to word it at least neutrally, if nicely was beyond you
at the moment..

Actually, the "skip" filter has been around forever. There definitely
are people who've been using it all this time.
Which ajax response are you referring to? I looked back as far as #95
but didn't find an ajax response.

Yes, well, popcorn, now we shall have a cf that openly gives explicit
instructions on it's use IN THE OPENING STATEMENT. I'm sure there are plenty
of grexxers out there who, like I was, are totally ignorant of this option.
They won't be now..

I doubt that the publicity will change things much. Anyway, I think
that letting people know what tools are available to them to control
their own environment on Grex is a good thing.

I agree with 113-115. Sidhe I'm sorry if my opening remarks were
overly rude. It's just that censorship is a *hot button* issue for me
as someone who self publishes poetry that sometimes contains cyberpunk
& erotic themes. I'm glad that this is working out, it seems to me that
the twit filters should give people the sort of control over items they
may desire.
I have been reading the "Virtual Community" to try to understand the
need for safe spaces in conf systems, and I will say the book does help me
understand your point of view better, though I still think twit filters
are the best solution to this dilema. BTW I would recommend the virtual
community to everyone here on Grex, it's mainly about The WELL in San Francisco
which is picospan based BBS just like Grex that faces many of the same issues
we do.

Indeed, give me the details.
I'm sorry to have pushed your trigger. VERY sorry, trust me! :>
I hope the twitters work, but if it turns out that it doesn't, may we
please reopen this discussion, with less hostility, next time?
I really have no intention of creating an Orwellian Totalitarinistic
nightmare.
