The ::Cue:cat scanner is a pretty interesting topic. The manufacturer wants
to use them to build a very Orwellian database of user interests, but the
Linux community has been happily figuring out the scan protocols to decode
the things locally. Now the manufacturer is sending out myriads of lawyer
letters demanding this unauthorized activity cease at once!

The CueCat isn't really that big of a deal.

They won't know that Kevin Nicholls of South Lyon, MI just scanned a copy of
Heavy Weather by Weather Report. But they will know that a single caucasian
male who is 23 and lives in the 48178 zip code did.

You do have to register the CueCat, and I suppose in theory, they could link
names to things that the CueCat scans, but the probability of that happening
is insanely low. For starters, most e-businesses have gravitated towards
"permission marketing" and realize that spamming you is a good way to lose
business.

All it can really do (right now) is help with junk snail mail. The CueCat
could help a company like Columbia House, by showing that there are more males
between 18 and 32 who like jazz in 48178 than 48108. That would then induce
Columbia House to send ads for their jazz club to males in 48178, and send
a different mailer to males in 48108. Personally, I think it's a good thing.
We're all going to get junk mail anyway. I'd rather have junk mail that I may
be interested in, instead of ads for things I'll never buy.

Is that how they are using the results? One thing I do know is that each and
every unit has a serial number which is part of the scan data. So if you
registered, they'll know that Kevin Nicholls did in fact make that scan.

Whether they save that data or just use the more generic demographic is not
something I know the details of.

Stayed out until 6:00 AM. Oyyy. Had fun and got to know people better,
and seeing a person's cool apartment has given me ideas to make my
house abjectly cool. And I found skeleton lights!!! Yes! In my house
year round!

However, after testing positive for psuedoephedrine from two cold
tablets, Mr. Fleming was forced to relinquishe the gold, whereupon his
fellow teamates in the rock-paper-scissors relay and paper football
squad gave up their medals in protest.

Huron won, Syracuse won, Michigan won, Michigan State lost, and Purdue
lost. This is VERY GOOD. (sorry MSU ppl) Purdue hopefully will still
be shell-shocked next week when they play UM, and it's always, always
nice to see MSU lose.

re: 102 -- Did you intentionally ignore me pointing that out in #101.
Yes, it's technically possible. No, they aren't going to use it.
And, I happen to know a lot about CueCat, as it relates to my job. :-P

(if I can drop a couple of o's...)

(I'm happy because of Nature Valley's new Maple & Brown Sugar granola
bars. it's really tasty, and I'm surprised I didn't see them in Canada
first, since nearly everything in Canada comes in a maple flavor in
addition to the regular flavors. are these available downstate, or are
we a test market?)

re: 113 -- Depends on how you look at it. I don't work for CueCat. I do work
in interactive advertising, though. So...I'm supposed to know all about these
things before they hit stores ;-)

Had an excellent evening and a wonderful morning. Finally getting some
catch up work done in one class, and still need to do catch up work in
another. Anyone here understand how to know when to account for
revenues?
