It *was* toothpaste, except the results of one choice or the other were
dramatically different, unlike with toothpaste...

**** **** SEVERE SOLAR RADIATION STORM **** ****
A severe solar radiation storm began today, 8 November, at 4:50 p.m. MST
(2350 UT), and has reached a level of S4 on the NOAA Space Weather
Scales. The storm, which currently ranks as the fourth largest since
1976, is expected to peak over the course of the next several hours and
then slowly diminish over the next three to four days.
This severe radiation storm could pose a hazard to the astronauts on the
International Space Station as well as passengers on commercial
airlines flying at high latitudes. The storm could also adversely
effect the operation of satellites.

damn...There goes the bands....my amateur radio club is doing a special event
station this weekend. Looks like contacts will be down this weekend compared
to last years event.
(FWIW: It's N8F, on 28.370, 21.370, 14.270, and 7.270)

Does this mean good aurora watching for those of us who don't have to
worry about losing satellites?

Speaking of election problems...
Nominations for the Grex Board of Directors close on Wednesday.
So far we have one candidate (Mark Conger) for three seats.
Candidates must be 18, live around Ann Arbor, and be willing to become
members if they are not members already. Candidates must also not be
Jan Wolter (term limits).
If you want to nominate yourself, or someone else, goto coop item 207
(item:coop,207).
Thanks

I'll make a note in Coop (item:coop,207) that you've made those
nominations. I'll also email everybody who may potentially be
in the running so that they know they're nominated. A few people
have been nominated in #207 who have neither accepted nor declined
as yet.

I'm honored to be nominated, but I must decline. I don't know where I'm
going to be living in a few months, and it's looking like it probably won't
be Michigan.

was 53 F: that's not "icy".

They probably had an error, which they later corrected. Yesterday, they
had a glaring typo in their lead headline on their homepage.

re 119 - well, that may be, but 53 degree water is just as likely to cause
hypothermia (hyper?) as 35 degree water.

(I don't know how fair it is to blame CNN. they pulled it from an AP
newsfeed.)

Couple years ago there was some news in the UP that got
national attention. It was strange to hear the
network announcers saying "upper peninsula" very
carefully and mysteriously like it was on Mars.
