Does Grex use the Realtime Blackhole List or any similar service that
provides a way to blackball sites that are known spam relays? (I'm not
necessarily making a suggestion -- I know there are good reasons not to
use such sites. I'm just curious.)

response 104 of 123: Mark Unseen   May 31 22:20 UTC 2001

Nope, grex doesn't use RBL. I looked early on, and the sites we got
spam from never seemed to actually be blocked in RBL. I figured there
wasn't much point. We *do* block all mail from sites that appear to be
dial-up ports. Generally this happens because I notice spam coming from
a "dialup" address. There's a service related to RBL that will also
block dial-up sites and perhaps we should be using that instead, but we
don't.

I just joined the puzzle conference. The introduction says:

        First item 95, last 154

but "browse" starts with Item 129. What happened to the others, and why
the disagreement on the 'first' item's number?

mdw - you wern't rude at all. where did that come from? for myself and
everyone else who reads this item, i asked how something worked that
had been set up and was totally new here on grex.

maybe i should have raised the question in the "intersting mail i
have received lately" item .. or whatever that item is ... but something
way back there suggested that the sys prob item was going this way
for the moment.

as for the 'whole header' i certainly know how to include the whole
header in email. you got it. that's all there is. and just for the
record, here is what i sent to myself with ~m in mail:

Hi all, I have a question for you. I had a modem given to me, from a E-machine
computer we think, unfortunately, on my Hewlett Packard, running win 98,
(sorry, couldn't get linux on it...), I cannot get it to recognize it as
anything except a PCI card. I downloaded driver program for it, (it has a
PCtel chip) and still nothing... I already have high speed, but will be moving
in the next little while to an area that doesn't have it.. any suggestions..
thanks all
myrrdan.

response 118 of 123: Mark Unseen   Jun 12 15:18 UTC 2001

You have to install a Modem Enumerator Driver first.

Remove the modem drivers, then remove the modem from your computer. Turn your
computer back on, go to your control panel, and click "ADD NEW HARDWARE". From
there, tell the computer not to detect your hardware (if this is an available
option), click on PORTS, then HAVE DISK, and point to where your modem driver
is. You should see "PCTel High Speed Modem Enumerator" or something similar
that will want to be on COM4.

Finish installing the driver, reboot the system, then shut it down, install
the modem, turn the system on, and it should now ask you for your modem
drivers.

Ameridreck isn't handling Grex's phones right. I called on
761-3554 and did not get a ring. I called back on -3000 and
got a line, but got dropped 3 minutes later because I got the
modem with the defective flow control. I tried dialing back
on both -3000 and -3554 and did not get a ring on either one.

Also, the telnet queue is whacked:

11 waiting, 34 remote + 2 local users; 72 max remote users; 23257 head
...3 of 12; 36 users

The wait was forever, never more than 36 users & 12 waiting.
