At the respond or pass prompt or the OK promt type:

help conf

That should do it (actually it will, I tested it before entering this just
to be sure I was giving good information :-))

The question dealt with newsgroups, not conferences.
I gave up on trying to read news a while back (just too much stuff & too
little of it of interest to me), so I can't answer specifically, but I think
that diligent searching of the online help in trn (and maybe the man as well)
is likely to turn up the answer. I think I remember seeing something dealing
with this.

All of the newsgroups should be in your .newsrc file. To view it, type

!page .newsrc

I don't believe that's correct. When trn runs for the first time
it only puts a few newsgroups in your .newsrc. (at least nowadays)

Since Bill's .newsrc only has 12 lines in it, I'm **sure** you're wrong, Dan.
(Um, Bill, I only counted the lines (using wc -l); but if you don't want
people to know what groups you read, you should do chmod go-r .newsrc
(or !chmod go-r .newsrc from Picospan). Just BTW.)

Hmmm. Well, mine has 2,457 lines in it, with all but a couple of
newsgroups unsubscribed. One thing you can do, Bill, is take a look
at mine. It has most of the newsgroups in it.

btw, a newsgroup is not subscribed to when a "!" appears right after
the name.

And you guys say *my* .newsrc is big... >8)

Opppps, I'm sorry, but I made an error. Mine has 2,485 lines. :)

You can look at /news/lib/active for a full list of newsgroups, but
that doesn't have any descriptions in it. For a list, with
descriptions, of the "mainstream" groups, check news.announce.newusers.

And the new (today) announcement that 500+ groups "have been added,"
which I was able to see only once, but that's ok, the groups
weren't listed.

I'll check out /news/lib/active for the additions - are the groups
appended to that file, or shuffled into it whilly-nilly?

Appended.

I did notice several (like, 6 or so) duplicate newsgroup names. Is this
a problem? They are scattered through out that really large file. Would
the existance of the same group named twice account for receiving two
copies of some responses?

It might ... I assume so.

/news/lib/active no longer seems to have anything much in it, I presume since
we're now getting news through the net. Is there a way to look for newsgroups
of interest without having to go through them one-by-one, at present?

response 18 of 26: Mark Unseen   Feb 21 16:41 UTC 1994

The way I look for new newsgroups in rn at a "do you want to enter this
newsgroup?" prompt is,

lfoo<return>

where foo is a search string. So if you wanted to get a long list of
unsubscribed newsgroups, type lalt or lrec or lcomp or something. For a
shorter list, try things like lsex, ltv.

There's an nntp command to get the entire active list of newsgroups that
used to be available in /news/lib/active, but I don't remember it.

response 19 of 26: Mark Unseen   Feb 25 18:43 UTC 1994

Please try, there are a few of us who would like to peruse the real
list - thankxx.
kaplan
response 20 of 26: Mark Unseen   Feb 25 21:55 UTC 1994

OK, I've gotten the active list from an nntp server at the U of M that we
seem to be allowed to use. The default server, condor, is down, so I'll
have to try that again later. The file is called
/usr/local/inet/caen-active

To use this news server without touching your .newsrc or the news software
on grex, type at the next prompt,

!telnet srvr1-e.engin.umich.edu 119

and type help once you're connected.

and for those who can't telnet?

kaplan
response 23 of 26: Mark Unseen   Mar 31 16:25 UTC 1994

Apologies for not posting before, but active lists of newsgroups from both
caen and condor are now available. Use !zmore or !zcat to look at them.

/usr/local/inet/caen-active.gz /usr/local/inet/active.gz

The address of the caen news server we can use has changed. Try
 !telnet srvr1.engin.umich.edu 119
at the next prompt. Tsty, have you tried to do this? If I'm not mistaken,
non-members are permitted to telnet to port 119 of any host.
