Problem posting to usenet Mark Unseen   Aug 10 21:59 UTC 1994

I had a problem posting to usenet this evening. I got the following
error message:

Check spelling, Send, Abort, Edit, or List? Send
Can't send article to the server:
        441 400 loadav [innwatch:hiload] 2035 gt 2000
(Article not posted.)
Article appended to /u/raven/dead.article
A copy may be temporarily found in /u/raven/.article

I assume it has something to do with load average by the looks of the
error, and by the fact there were 45 users on when I last checked.
25 responses total.

I had that identical problem, but iwth different [innwatch:hiload] 2035 gt 2000
numbers here - it happened twice - but later I was able to get the file posted
sucessfully (well, no "failure" diagnostic, anyway.)

I emailed staff with the glitch and asked "why?," how to prevent, etc.

Oh, I was invoking inews -h fylename, which doesn't give the
Check spelling, Send, Abort, Edit, or List? Send opportunity.

A bit later ( and MUCH to my +dismay+ and *surprise*) there were THREE
identical articles posted to Usenet!!!!! **OUCH**

Guess I'm glad I'm in good company ....

I haven't seen this (& don't post to news very often), but I've seen
some pretty high load averages lately. Sounds as if maybe Pnews
checks that and aborts if the system is so loaded as to make posting
a problem - just by what the message said.

Because there ended up to be three (ouch!) postings of the
identical stuff, each with really different time stamps, I am
going to hold the opinion that the two "cancelled" postings were
simply postponed and the third (which did work) was the third!

Both root and I got some net-flames because of that triple-play and
at least one answer said that 'grex had a glitch, sorry.'

Maybe there is no actual connection between two declared failures
one delcared success which result in three separate postings, but
i'mnot gonna bet on that for a while. comment?

Speaking of probs posting to usenet:
I'm getting Pnews not found errors. Has it been temp. removed?
Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I noticed this a few weeks ago, and sent mail to staff.
I never got any response.

Well, I don't read the hated Agora conference, so I would never
have seen it there.

Thanks for finally answering, popcorn!

If you ever don't get a response from mail sent to staff, please try
again. No one will think you're being pushy. You're entitled to a response.
(Sometimes we let them drop through the cracks - it's never intentional.)

Pnews is in MY directory and it works just fine - - (found it) - - BUT it
also relies on Inews, which I don't have. So not ALL of the usenet
software needs to be re-made, just Inews.

Certainly would appreciate the re-make of Inews ..... I was actually
beginning to make an "existance" out there (not a life though).

My pnew must have been munched also. If someone could restore it I
would appreciate it. This is the message I got when I tried to post:

        (leaving cbreak mode; cwd=/home/raven)
Invoking command: QUOTECHARS='>' Pnews -h /u/raven/.rnhead

/bin/sh: Pnews: not found

(re-entering cbreak mode)

Some staff members were talking about this Wednesday night.
We know that it needs recovering. Someone has to go out to the warehouse
and fiddle with tapes to get it restored. It should happen soon.

Latest problem, when I run TRN I get this message:
Couldn't get name of news server from
                /usr/local/news/nntpserver
Either fix this file, or put NNTPSERVER in your environment.

Apparently yet another of Grex' files has been lost, this one
onvolves the local news server. Since I use an off-site server,
I didn't even notice until someone else asked me why Usenet
wouldn't work. "I don't know, it's working fine for me." >8)
