Plan for the Grex birthday picnic Mark Unseen   Mar 26 17:23 UTC 1998

Well, we're coming up on another grex birthday, and we need to choose a date.
The date proposed at last night's board meeting was July 19. This is the day
after the art fair closes. The idea was that people could come to town for
the art fair, and stay over to go to the Grex Picnic. What do people think?

It's as close as we're going to get to the actual day. I'll be artfairing
Saturday, so Sunday would be good.
   Gads. 7 years.

Could someone explain more about the Grex picnic to new members?
(Try :/teh/the/).

Yes, art fair day would definately be a bad idea. Sunday would be nice.
i may actually attend a grex gathering someday - after all I've been here just
about as long as anyone else, just not often :)

We've usually done something face-to-face around the time of Grex's
Birthday (Grex was opened to the public on 7/18/98 about 4:30pm). I'm
not quite sure why we do this, but it's fun. Maybe, in those first
years, we were celebrating the fact that we'd managed to survive. We
certainly didn't have much money then (not that we do now), and it was
an open question whether we'd survive or not.

And, because it's summer and nice, the f-t-f gethering is usually a potluck
picnic.
(I know, I'm just used to vi, and I forgot to fix it when I did go into vi.)

(STeve meant "7/18/91" in #4.)

The Grex birthday picnic has always been held at Island Park, since that was
the site of the famous FOG meeting.

FOG = Friends of Grex

The FOG meeting was a public gathering, held a few weeks before
Grex went online, for the founders to explain what they were up
to and for people to talk about what they'd like to see by way
of conference setup. Highlights I can recall: Katie and polygon
volunteered to be Agora fw's; it was decided not to give fw's
the power to censor; a few initial conferences were decided on,
with a mechanism for requesting new ones in the Coop conference.

I like these yearly anniversary potlucks, I think the establishment
of Grex is something worth celebrating once a year, and the July 19
date sounds fine to me.

re #6: Yes, that is most certainly what STeve meant.

We must stress that there is not now, nor has there ever been, a
Grex time machine. Indications to the contrary are irresponsible
rumor-mongering and responsible parties will be investigated
and disciplined for dissemination of uncleared information.

So if I understand this right, grexers living to for to attend would
be Friends Of Grex In Exile (FOGIES). Righ

(I'll see what I can do to import/accommodate some out-of-town Grexers.
even when I'm on vacation from Grex, I like going to the birthday
party; it gives me a sense of perspective.)

Yes, before your appearance at the party last year, I was
wondering if you still existed. That fact that you obviously
did gave me a sense of perspective too.

Rumor supports the growing body of evidence that there will be a grex time
machine invented in the near future, however. I myself have witnessed it's
effects. I was visited by someone online who was operating the time machine
last fall. They made a number of accurate predictions, such as declaring that
the Detroit Tigers would not win the NBA championship, and that there would
be an Olympic Games in Japan early this year. Who could have known?

They also predicted that I'd get a haircut in the next two years. They were
astonishingly accurate.

RE #15 The Detroit Tigers can't win an NBA championship -- they're a baseball
team.

re #16: of course it's a baseball team. That's the point. :) Sorry,
sometimes I'm a bit subtle for people. I was making the predictions
frightfully obvious and easy to predict, I thought.
