Five Freedoms vs. Five Simpsons Mark Unseen   Mar 1 21:21 UTC 2006

A pollster conducted a survey this month where they asked people to name
the five freedoms guaranteed in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights,
and to name the five members of the Simpsons tv family.

Many more people could name all five members of the Simpsons.

If that isn't an indictment of our society I don't know what is.
26 responses total.

It might not be an indictment of our society. This is information that
people learn, and soon forget because they do not have to apply it very
often. One might suggest this is a good reflection of our
society...freedoms are violated so seldomly that their memorization has
become unnecessary.

nharmon if people don't know the five freedoms, how are they supposed to know
when those freedoms have been violated?

Silly richard. The USA has freedom of speech..just not freedom of thought.

Richard, there is a difference between knowing your freedoms, and
memorizing which amendment those freedoms are listed under.

The poll says a lot more about memory function than priorities. Forty
years ago you coulda done a poll showing that more people knew the names
of "My Three Sons" than the freedom guaranteed by the the Third
Amendment. If the constitution was made into a funny cartoon that was
on TV every night, people would know it backwards and forwards. They
could have catch phrases and t-shirts and everything.

I suppose we need to do an updated version of "Three Ring Circus" where
they take out the part about checks and balances.

Still, the survey has some humor value.

Most people can't recite in detail any law that protects them from anything.
They rely upon courts, lawyers, and NGO to help them. If they feel that their
rights have been violated almost anyone will go to a lawyer to get an opinion
and assistance.

Freedom of the press, speech, religion, assembly and petition are not
"details." If you don't know them ahead of time, you might not "feel" they've
been violated.

Re #11: everyone has at least a vague idea of their rights, but it has been
shown that Americans do have a very poor idea about the specifics - and if
asked in certain ways will even object to some of their rights.

Woah there Mr. Obvious. The same thing can be said about ANYTHING.

"There is actually a certain percentage of americans who know their own
name"

"There is actually a certain percentage of americans who know how to
generate electricity from cold fusion"
