The Sad Item Mark Unseen   Dec 31 16:48 UTC 2015

If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.

What's bumming you today?

I'm sad that I messed up the candidate list, which caused some problems voting.

My Western Digital 4TB "My Cloud" drive bit it. It's not even a year
old. Red light in the front. I never had anything critical on it but
still... waste of time and money. It always was very crunchy. I
thought it was just the way it operated. I used it to stream music and
movies at home and occasionally streamed some of the content from work.
Nice device when it isn't dead. I'm thinking of putting a different
drive in the case. I also ordered one of those SATA hard drive
enclosures to see what's really going on with the drive.

#4 Yes, USB. Not even a year old. I voided the warranty by taking it
apart. With the mac I just reformatted it and it seems to be fine. I
just backed up all of my data and put the drive away for safe keeping.
No sense in wasting a nice 3.5 drive of that size.

Right now I'm kind of burned with the streaming appliance idea. It takes
seconds just to throw a move on a flash drive and plug it in the tv.
Alternately, PLEX is excellent. A very good use for a retired mac mini.

I just read that Raspberry Pi 3 is coming out with integrated wifi and
bluetooth and a 50% faster processor. IMO it won't be long before a
version 5 or 6 is out that runs Desktop Ubuntu. It would be great to
rubber band a Pi to a hard drive and use it as a media server. Low
power, low maintenance, low cost, small footprint.

I've heard great things about WD Live TV for streaming.
PS4 is wonderful if you like Cinavia chasing you down like a rapist.
I like my Asus 66U's media server with the WD Passport snapped into it
but you have to have something like the WD Live TV there to not
screw with big brother's hand in it.

Keith Emerson died. Darn. Only 71. George Martin died the other
day, too. Who's next?

Genius, great sense of humor, master song writer and musician,
provocative, interesting, original, remarkable (for making it despite
adversity), ladies man, made a huge impact, inspired a lot of people,
gave from his heart and his wallet, known by all as an awesome human
being.

He will be missed. Gone way too soon.

For fun it s a wonderful toy.
What walks down stairs, alone or in pairs
And makes a slinkety sound?
A spring, a spring, a marvelous thing!
Everyone knows it s Slinky.
It s Slinky; it s Slinky.
For fun it s a wonderful toy.
It s fun for a girl and a boy.

It turns out my robot distress transmitter was a cheap toy from the
60's made of tin and a flashlight bulb.
Now I'm pulling the "oh sh@#" handle in my car. Will that do anything?
