Trials and tribulations of being female... Mark Unseen   Nov 28 20:18 UTC 1997

I think one of the worst things about being femal is the ruined sheets.

I hate waking up to a gush of blood that misses the sanitary pads (I use two at
night) and pools itself in the sheets and the mattress. Somehow that always
happens after the towel I put under me that night has wandered off onto the
floor or under my husband. And all too often when my prettiest sheets are on
the bed.

It's bad enough if you wake up right away, in bed by your self. The you can
jump up, pour cold water through the sheet and toss it into the washer, make up
the bed with new sheets, and then return to bed and to sleep -- if you can.

But if you share your bed, you either have to wake your partner and go through
the ritual above, or wait several hours until your partner wakes up (and the
blood has a chance to set) and then give it your best shot to get the blood
out. My experience has not been good.

Over the years, I've almost become resigned to bloody sheets.

Has anyone found a good solution to this problem?

A hysterectomy? Actually, I use dark sheets just for that very reason.
I also never wear anything but black on the bottom, since I have a problem
with flooding during the day too. Blach.

And you wonder why all the old TV shows had the married couple sleeping in
separate twin beds? ;)

Well, there ya go. But, seriously, if you're going that heavily, you may
have a problem. I, myself, had surgery this month to (knock wood) end the
problem, with any luck

well, i used to be like that when i was younger, but that
was before the super extra long heavy overnight pads of today.
maybe wearing a pair of shorts to add an extra layer between
you and the sheets?
or try to ensure that you wake up a couple of times during the night
so the pads can be changed? alarm, or drink a lot of liquid so
your bladder will wake you?

would those 'incontinence' type pads work?

Incontinence pads might be the answer if i were thinner -- but they aren't
made for 250 pound plus adults as far as I can tell. (Up to 150 pounds is
the largest I've found so far.)

It's only heavy for a few days, Twila, and I don't usually have periods
regularly. That's part of the problem. It's in the very first days, when
I'm not always expecting it, that I "get" the sheets.

I have found an answer. I have some stuff that a lad selling door to door
told me would get out anything, so when Larry woke up yesterday, I took those
poor sheets, (cream with a floral pattern -- no bleach allowed) and sprayed
them with this potion. Then I threw them into the washer with cold water and
my usual laundry aids. They came out so clean that I couldn't 8find* the
place where the crusted blood had been. No more stained sheets for me!
Hurrah! And maybe I won't have to reserve special "don't look" panties for
use during my period! Wow!

And the foolish boy put some in his mouth during the show 'n tell, so I
suspect that it won't cause too much skin irritation.

As I recall, Era is great for getting out blood and other protien stains

(Have you considered mentioning this in the laundry conference?)

We have a laundry conference? I didn't know that!

Yes, we have a laundry conference. I just discovered it myself, and already
a chance to proselytize!

I have found that the Kotex Overnites work well. Extra thick and long.
Usually the only problem is that if I roll to the side in my sleep, it may not
catch it all.

You know, you can use tampons overnight...

I am the f-w of laundry. Join and come clean, my child. Thanks for spreading
the gospel, orinoco.

In theory tampons would be a good iea for overnight, but I find them so
painful that I wouldn't be able to sleep while they were in place.

I use a couple of overnighht pads at night to make them longer -- but they
still manage to miss a lot -- perhaps because I sleep on my side a lot. ;)

That's why I thought the pull on brief incontinence pads mighht work -- they'd
cover the sides with elastic. Oh well. Maybe someday they'll make larger
pads.

I have a special set of sheets I use that week "just in case", plus cold water
and bleach are my best friends. =)

Um, why would tampons hurt? I swear by those things. And I'm of the sort who is
in pain (if not during, then for a day afterward) at every gyno exam, even with
the smallest instruments.

I never use tampons. I tried them in college, but didn't really like them,
and *shrug* haven't been motivated to try again, particularly after the toxic
shock syndrome deal several years ago.

Most of the uncomfortable feeling can be due to them not being in far enough.
My friend couldn't get hers past the vaginal muscles, which should support
it from the bottom, not hold it.
mta
response 21 of 53: Mark Unseen   Dec 10 01:03 UTC 1997

In my case it's because of a short vagina and an irritable cervix. Basically,
the tampon rests againsts the cervix and rubs. It causes cramps even when
I'm not menstruating.

I suppose there may be a brand that wouldn't hurt, but I'm not willing to
experiment. It hurts that much.

Excuse me for this, but have you tried Always? From the ads I have seen on
TV they seem to have wings right where you need them. Can't say anything about
how long they are, but wouldn't it be logical to position the pad further to
the rear in your panties? Or maybe wear tighter fitting panties.

I hope that this suggestion helps some

Any reason a too-long tampon couldn't be - ah - trimmed to fit better?
