Conference Administrivia
|
Sep 16 21:50 UTC 2006 |
This is the conference administrivia item. Post items of an administrative
nature about the conference itself here. For instance, if you'd like to
nominate new fair witnesses, report abuse, etc.

Note: This conference is the combination of the legacy "jellyware" and
"scripting" conferences. Jellyware focused only on Unix and C, and this
conference has a somewhat broader scope. Scripting was about, well, Unix
scripting and that seemed appropriate to merge into a conference who's scope
is programming of all kinds (including, well, Unix scripting).

This conference doesn't appear to be available under the "bits" alias.

Yes; Walter thought he had too many aliases. We agreed to leave off bits (and
VMS) as aliases for right now. If there's enough user demand, he's agreed
to add it. So, clamor away!

I was just surprised that the supposed name of the conference wouldn't get a
user to the conference. Once I know that, it's easy enough just to use "jelly."

Well, if enough users ask for it, Walter will add it. So, by all means, ask
away. Btw- you can also use "systems" and "programming" now, as well as
"jelly" and "unix".

So, given the present level of activity, it seems that the conference restart
has been a (tentative) success. I'm hoping we can maintain the current level
of energy. To that end, is there anything we should be doing to facilitate
that? Any improvements that could be made? Post your suggestions!

the conference looks pretty sharp, cross !
on m-net, the UNIX conference has a bunch of guides that are accessible from
the prompt. the login message details how to access the guides. maybe you
could add a little guide like that to this conference ? just an idea to throw
around.

That's a good idea; I'll have a look at what's on M-Net. Thanks for the
suggestion!

I've linked over the "Short computer questions" item from the current agora.
Is that appropriate for this conference, or should it be unlinked? Thoughts?

I don't think "j bits" gets you here -- at least it didn't seem to
when I tried it the other day. Perhaps an alias needs to be set up?

At one point, Walter Cramer thought we had too many aliases for this
conference; he didn't want to add bits. However, he did say that he would
do so if there was a lot of user demand. So demand away, and I'll shoot him
an email in a couple of days and see if we can get it added!

I've been reading some of the older threads in the Unix conference on M-Net.
There's some interesting stuff in there! I'm going to repost some of the
topics here and see if we can develop any good conversation around them.

Why was item 105 retired? It seemed like a good question to me, but it was
removed by the fairwitness before anyone could respond.
