Pilot held over air 'joke'
The Paris-bound flight was delayed as a result of the incident
An Air France pilot has been arrested at New York's John F Kennedy
Airport after reportedly joking at a security checkpoint that he had a
bomb in his shoes.
A Port Authority spokeswoman said the pilot was detained after making
what she described as an inappropriate remark.
The pilot, who was not identified, was later charged with falsely
reporting an incident.
Flight AF009, which had been due to leave New York late on Friday, was
delayed as a result and 350 passengers had to stay in local hotels
overnight.
The flight eventually left for Paris Charles de Gaulle airport after a
new co-pilot flew in from Paris, an Air France spokesman in Paris told
BBC News Online.
The airline said the pilot had been arrested following "misinterpreted
remarks".
A witness told the French news agency AFP that the man had jokingly
referred to a bomb in his shoes as he passed through security.
Airport police detained him and he is due to appear before a judge, as
early as Sunday, on charges which could result in a jail term of up to
11 years, the agency said.

This isn't particularly news; there have been signs at checkpoints for *years*
saying that you can't joke with those people, they have to take everything
seriously, and do.
The pilot really should know better; while 11 years would be ridiculous, he
should at least be sanctioned by his airline.

Actually, the signs say something closer to, "Jokes will be prosecuted as
threats;" no 'please' to it.
And yes, the signs have been up a long time.

Like, Ohh!!, Joe's been flying crafts for the last 20 years with us,
why would he blow up a craft. Anyways, lets check his boots .... no

The pilots who do stuff like that don't joke about it at security checkpoints
beforehand. They hide it, and in the case of the Egypt Air pilot you're
alluding to, he hid it so well that Egypt Air still denies the possibility.

point is, he probably will have absolutely nothing happen to him. But they
could not take a chance. If you tell me on the border you are smuggling, the
odds are you are going to end up in secondary while we search your vehicle.
If they didn't respond, or if we didn't respond, and something did happen,
who the hell do you think they would blame?

Yes, all I am saying is why couldn't they just frisk him and let him go
later?? Why the court and stuff like that? Infact, they should frisk
(including footwear) everyone irrespective of whether you claim
carrying bombs or not.

Why would a pilot have bombs in his shoes? A pilot should be able to crash
a plane quite handily without the trouble and expense of a bomb.

Re #12: I agree that the guy needed to be searched, and miss his flight.
You make a comment like that at an airport checkpoint, you deserve
a cavity search. You make a comment like that at the border, you
shouldn't be surprised if your car gets vacuumed while you sit for
a few hours.
I'm disagreeing with the idea that the guy needs to go to jail for
seven years (the 11-year figure is inaccurate, but 7 is still nuts).

Here is what they should do at the airport.
Require everyone to take off clothes and footwear excluding
undergarments ;-) Hold all this stuff in your hands and stand in a
queue. When your turn comes handover your clothes/footwear to a
security officer who checks them while a second guy frisks you. :))
Neat, Eh?
If you still get bombed/hijacked start doing dental and anal checks
too. :D

Yeah, but if you started doing that, people would start going through
security just for the fun of doing a strip tease followed by an anal
exam.
