I'd like to suggest that at least 15 seconds be allotted for gavel
banging.

You are more than welcome to make that suggestion.

Actually, he merely expressed the desire to make that suggestion.

What is a default twit filter? Is it something that a beginner can easily
learn to use? One of our beginners was disgusted when she recently looked
at agora and I agree with her comments about the mental age of some of the
recent posters. She has no idea what a .cfonce file is (nor do I know where
to find mine without help). Were you considering setting up something in the
menu that lets people fill in certain user names easily?
Maybe with a brief explanation as to its purpose?

When I first arrived here, I found the behavior of many Grexers to be
completely and totally repulsive. I was disgusted, quite frankly.
But rather than get all fussy about it, I started posting my own
items, and to my delight, the environment quickly changed, and became
significantly more tolerable.

If by "default twit filter" he means that some users are added to the
filtered list by default based on their activity in the conference,
and new users will be unable to read their posts without disabling the
filter, I'm opposed to the idea.

I find that idea wildly ridiculous since everyone prefers different
kinds of posts. They can install their own twit filter.

I think it would be a better idea to fishbowl Agora, and make it a
place where the 'cool kids' hang out.

Jdeigert suggests that every time people log on to Agora, there be a brief
message telling them how to use the twit filter in order to avoid the
droppings of certain people who prefer a different environment. Set it up
so people only have to fill in the names of the users who they want to avoid
the 'contributions' of, without having to know anything about .cfonce files
or programming. Maybe as part of the change program. Maybe with an
explanation of why there is a need for this approach. And that way people
who don't like the environment they find when they enter grex can filter it
out and have the playground entirely to themselves and their friends.

I'd like for Russ to elaborate on his concept, but I'm sure I'd
be opposed to anything that filters particular users by default
(much as I disagree with willards's before/after characterization
of Agora).

I would favor an easier-to-use and more flexible filtering facility
than is now available. The sheer volume of material in the current
Agora -- far more than any previous one -- makes that desirable.
I'd oppose editorializing on the "need" for it, though -- different
users have different "needs". Make its availability known, and
leave it up to the individual whether they want to use it or not.

Regarding filtering, it should be pointed out:

(a) Someone would have to write the software.

(b) In any case, it wouldn't work with backtalk.

#15: The nice thing about this country (and Grex, so I thought) is
that we're all allowed to have different opinions.
