National Writer's Union

I just received a brochure from the National Writers Union.  They are
affiliated with the UAW, and seem to be a cross between a labor union
and an advocacy group for writers.  Their services include grievance
handling, contract consultation, agent referral, and health care plans.
Sounds like it might be a useful group for freelancers.
