Stock Photography Mark Unseen   Feb 19 01:58 UTC 2007

A big part of web design is incorporating graphics. However the amount
of time it takes to develop those graphics is enormous. As a result, a
lot of amateur and professional web designers use stock photography
obtained on the web.

So, where do you get your stock photography?

For a long time I've used iStockphoto.com for my professional work, but
now I'm finding Wikimedia Commons selection to be improving.

Actually, I supply stock photos to iStock. Under the name "YoyoDyne Tech".
A friend of mine and I are YoyoDyne. He is the photographer (mostly) and I'm
the business side. Except when I have some cool photos to share.

The name "Yoyodyne", apparently from a Pynchon novel, seems to have been
adopted by a amazing variety of companies: autoparts, entertainment,
direct marketing - and stock photos. I suppose it was not protected as a
trademark.

Yoyodyne is from "The Crying of Lot 49" and from the movie Buckaroo Bonzai.
in the novel, it is a southern california defense contractor. In the movie,
it is the bad guys.

There wouldn't be a trademark problem unless it was used by more than one
entity for the same industry.

...or one of them thinks they have a priority to its use. Perhaps its use in
a novel prevents other trademark claims.
