One problem with grate ideas is they don't hold water. ;->.

response 3 of 49: Mark Unseen   Aug 9 06:40 UTC 1994

ah yes, but they sure do smooth the road to knowledge :)

i got a dictionary by my computer now, so maybe my spelling will improve.
we can hope, at least)

the problem with math is when you fail for the first time it's hard to be on
track again.

response 8 of 49: Mark Unseen   Feb 9 06:05 UTC 1995

I generally find that I need to see most math subjects at least twice,
three times is better- the first time, I'm entirely at sea. The second
time it looks familiar and begins to form patterns. The third time,
I have the sense of it well enough to work with the concepts, see where
they go and how and why, the implications and uses, etc.-- all that stuff
that real mathematicians get the first time through. It's a pity that
such repetition requires "failure", rather than being a reasonable
learning option. Try not to take it too hard if you need to go back
and do something over, although it does mess up the schedule.

What area is it that you are in trouble over?

I am really happy to see this. I will be here a lot I hope but not for help
though. I think it is a good idea.

It's been *very* quiet here - I guess everyone understands everything
this year.

But we need some perns to tutor. Could you round up a few, and deposit
them here, with questions? The tutors are getting fanny fatigue..

Hmm... If anyone has a homework question, they can also write me for
help. It won't bother me at all.

I need help, tutoring and whatever. I've been on GREX for about three
weeks now, I read "join infor" and gleened some info but I learned
just enough to be dangerous. Maybe something in BBS for newuser
on all the commands on how to clear up my mistakes and talk to some-
one who jumps in or how toget someone in plain words or how to edit
my stuff. How to get on the internet. Also explain some ofthe jargon
that is used and its meaning. I don't have the foggiest idea of how
to download or upload or how I can use Grex to its fullest. This is
suposed to be the turoring conference. If your reply takes a couple of
pages it may be worth while to someone else besides me. I know there
is abunch of newbies out there. With my limited knowledge I showed
someone how to get on GREX today. But thats about all. So what ever
you can give me I will try; and pass on to the ne xt person and maybe
get him tocough up a few bucks for membership. I joined because I thought
that if I used it I could help support it. I'll be watching to see who
wants to help this poor soul out.

Do you have the brochure, "Take Me to Your Modem"? It describes how to get
around in Picospan. Beyond that - you are almost on your own. I could have
written what you wrote in #19 2+ years ago. I asked a lot of dumb
questions, looked around the system (when I figured out how), looked up
key words in the info cf, and asked some more less (perhaps) dumb
questions. I finally bought "UNIX for Dummies" - and discovered that it
was too elementary for me! What you could do right away is to use lynx -
which guides you with hypertext.

It would be a *very good thing* to have an organized FAQ (= "frequently
asked questions") that goes beyond "Take me to..."...but some volunteer
woujld have to write it, and the most knowledgeable volunteers are all up
to their eyebrows in system stuff.

You might also use "write help" (no quotes), when you have a question
urge. There are often (not always) volunteer helpers with their "helper
flag" set, and that command starsts a write with them. Just getting
answers to some *key* questions often greatly accelerates your own
exploration.

Finally (for the nonce), try 'find "keyword"' (no single quotes) at
an Ok: prompt in the info cf, and start exploring the answers that
are already posted.

The info conf may be a hodgepodge at the moment, but it is the
exact place for questions like this. I think the idea in tutoring was
to help people with academic questions. (homework, studying, etc.)

I thought it was a fair question - even item - for tutoring, considering
the state of info. He's studying Grex. But yes, tutoring was created
to give "academic" assistance. Anyone need any?

We certainly haven't been overwhelmed with academic questions, lately, so
John's question didn't seem out of place to me. I'm with Rane, though,
it'd be nice to get some more academic questions, too.

Thanks for the info guys, I went to the library and got "A students
guide to UNIX" by Harley Hahn and it helps answer alot of questions
that I have. Now all I have to do is read the dad gum thing.
