You aren't having much luck, are you :)? All I know about the trail
is that, when it passes through the mid Sierra Nevada, it is at a
relatively low elevation, and not along the crest. But I've never
hiked any of it as well as I can recall - at least, not deliberately.
I would expect there are books about the trail, though - though you
have probably consulted all of those. What I did when I lived in
California was undertake weekend and some week-long treks in the
High Country, like climbing Mt. Lassen, or circling the Palisades.
That's rather different from long-distance trail hiking. I will say
that, for summer (usually August) in the high country, we did not
carry tents, since it only rained from 4-5 pm (every day.....).

I've known several people that have done it - two are on the trail
now. I've been over a number of pieces of the Appalachian Trail,
but never set aside the time to take on the whole thing. (I've slept
on Mt. Khatadin, so you might say I've been in at the "finish" :)).
