Just in case anyone's reading: Do we assume that intelligent
exteraterrestrial life would be able to morph or otherwise disguise themselves
so they could walk among humans undetected? Also, if they could, would they
want to? And assuming an affirmative to both of the above questions, would
it be for reasons of protocol (if they follow a "Prime Directive"-like policy)
or a darker, malevolent purpose? If they have the ability to morph into human
form, then we have little chance of revealing them, and this argument would
be moot (and the search would turn into a witch hunt). If an evolutionary
superiority they have over us allows this, then we're, if you will excuse the
term, screwed. However, if they can only disguise themselves through make-up
or plastic surgery, then we have a much better chance.
Without anwers to the first questions, or, indeed, the basic premise: whether
intelligent exteraterrestrial life exists, this is all academic. A conclusion
simply cannot be reached without assuming a whole lot of answers, but if you
believe, then that in itself is assurance enough.

A couple of considerations you haven't considered... they could be A)
parasidic <sp?> and are able to make observations off the the creatures
(either human or otherwise) that they attach themselves to. or B) they are
already here, but have always just been assumed to have come from earth. Like
bugs. We know that there are thousands of species of bugs that have never been
observed or documented. What if a certain species was really from another
planet, just here to make observations.
Or, continuing on this same thread, there are lots of animals who's genetic
line has not been traced. Now, who knows that something bigger, like a rabbit
(and I know that we can figure out and say that a rabbit has descended from
somewhere else, but just for example) that we've always has assumed as being
from earth is actually just visiting, and sending notes back to its home
planet every couple of years.
Another question to be considered while we are considering this issue. Even
if aliens could morph into a human shape, do we know that they would want to?
Wouldn't it be more profitable for them to resemble something like a dog, an
animal that people will say anthing in front of, because they assume it can't
understand them. Just because an alien morphs doesn't mean it's going to
understand how humans think. And a human asking a human how it thinks is going
to get funny looks. A dog however, wouldn't. (Unless it was a tlaking dog.
Which is a whole 'nother item.)
