One of my favorite books is Dickens' A^H_ T^H_a^H_l^H_e^H_ o^H_f^H_ T^H_w^H_o^H_ C^H_i^H_t^H_i^H_e^H_s^H_. It is a simply f^Hfa^Has^Hsc^Hci^Hin^Hna^Hat^Hti^Hin^Hng^Hg description of the French Revolution. Don't you agree? W^HWE^HEL^HLL^HL?^H? Okay, perhaps K^H_i^H_s^H_s^H_ M^H_e^H_ D^H_e^H_a^H_d^H_l^H_y^H_ is more your speed!

Yep. The "more" and "less" pagers interpret the three-character sequence _^HX (where X is any printable character) as a command to display X underscored. They interpret X^HX as a command to display X in boldface. If you're not using a pager, the ^H just backspaces the cursor and you see X without any special attributes.

A pager displays output page by page, or in this case screen by screen, by causing the output to pause after each screenful.
