   I believe that all these limits come down to the fact that the tty
driver only lets 255 characters get stuffed in the input buffer before
it stops further ones from comming in.

Steve is now going to explain why DEC uses 512 bytes for their
block size, not 256, & how this limit is related to the Unix tty driver.
