WORLDNEWS FAIRWITNESSES SOUGHT. APPLY HERE. Mark Unseen   Apr 10 10:30 UTC 1996

I am about to request a restart for the worldnews conference which has
layed dormant for a long time now. In so doing, I am searching for people that
desire to be fairwitnesses. I would prefer that you would respond here, rather
than mailing me, because I tend to be a very lazy person on occaison, and if
I see your name here I am less likely to lose it.
There are no special requirements that you need, all you really need is
a desire to learn the art of fairwitnessing, and the commands, and of course
keeping the discussions on an even keel. I am looking for 2 people, with an
interest of world happenings (of course).

Thanks

Does it have enough traffic to warrent its continued existence? It
(Is) it different from politics?

As fw of politics, i'd consider a merger of the two...its been on my
agenda to rename politics the current affairs conf or something similar
that might broaden its appeal. i've found that discussing current issues
provokes more discussion than simply talking about the horse-race
aspects of politics.

The first world was wonderful, but I'm biased. (mythago and keats were
the original FWs of world, and the chemistry between them made for a
very satisifying read, even in hindsight.) I never found the second
incarnation anywhere near as fun or as informative.

re 1. He pissed me off so I killed him. ;)

re 3- I like that idea a little more than restarting the conference.
I'd be willing to combine the two confs as well.

Suggestion...link everything in that conf to the new "storage"
conf. Anything not redundant from there I will link to politics. We can
add the issues and news pointers, and rename it the "Current Affairs and
Politics Conference" Omni or someone who wants to volunteer can added as
co-fw and we'd have a setup that would benefit both confs.

I've been saying for some time, that a number of confs here would be in
better shape if some consolidation took place. Like there's a conf for
grexnews and a conf for the newsletter and an Info conf. All of which
could easily be one conf.

I don' know about including info in that one. Info is slightly different from
grexnews and newsletter. They are news about grex, and info is more how to
use grex, and unix, and the internet, and things like that. The ohter two,
tho, could be condenced, judging from the names. (Disclaimer: I've never
been in either one...)

I'd just as soon start without any of the items from world. Most, if not all
are full of personal attacks, and that is no way to start off. I'd just like
a clean start without all that crap.

I'd also like to add 1 more person for the new conference. Any volunteers?

omni, if you dont like the idea of merging politics and worldnews, I'll
agree to be co-fw of a re-started world conf. This would give me a little
extra linking leverage in case some items are relevant to politics.
omni
response 15 of 26: Mark Unseen   Apr 13 04:23 UTC 1996

I like the idea of the merge, but I don't want to drag garbage into a clean
conference. That's all I was saying.

response 16 of 26: Mark Unseen   Apr 13 13:15 UTC 1996

No reason why the current world conference couldn't just sit there, with new
articles going elsewhere.

response 17 of 26: Mark Unseen   Apr 13 18:05 UTC 1996

So why should it take up disk space. I say kill it dead, and let's rebuild
from the ashes. There is no useful purpose for it, if it is to be merged.
scott
response 18 of 26: Mark Unseen   Apr 13 18:26 UTC 1996

Disk space is not an issue any more.
kerouac
response 19 of 26: Mark Unseen   Apr 14 01:05 UTC 1996

this is the purpose of the "storage" conf...get the storage fw's to link
all the old world items there for safekeeping and we'll re-start it.

response 21 of 26: Mark Unseen   Apr 14 02:44 UTC 1996

Storage, carson, is a new cf, fwed by nephi and yours truely, the purpose of
which is to hold killed items. Nephi is in the process of getting mail to
all the fws, with more details, but the basic idea is to keep a copy of all
items, except for security risks, of course, around. We haven't decided if
we'll have a date at which we kill them or not. SO far, not.

response 22 of 26: Mark Unseen   Apr 16 00:54 UTC 1996

hmmm...maybe world should be merged with history instead...history's
been dead for some time, and scholarly historical debate can be discussed in
the context of current world events.

response 23 of 26: Mark Unseen   Apr 16 00:57 UTC 1996

Don't you dare. History is not dead - go history, and see how much
history is there. History is *doing* history.
kerouac
response 24 of 26: Mark Unseen   Apr 19 19:18 UTC 1996

Okay, lets keep World as is and just re-start it.....Omni and I can
be co-fw's. I'm thinking that we can just retireall the old items
as opposed to removing them to storage. The conf only has sixty or
so items so its not that cluttered anyway.,
