Barry Sanders Mark Unseen   Jul 30 18:00 UTC 1999

As much as I hate to do it, let's use this item to discuss Barry Sanders
and the chances the Lions have of winning the Super Bowl. (Like that will
happen is any of our lifetimes)

It's too simple to lay this all on the Lions. OTOH, it's true that the
franchise has essentially be pitiful since the 50's...

The Lions problem is that they pin thier hopes on one guy. One year it was
Eric Hipple, then it was Billy Sims, and then came Chuck Long, who proved to
be short on talent, not that he ever got a chance to develop his skills. Then
along comes Barry, and instead of building a team around him, they once again
pin thier hopes on him. You cannot do that and hope to win super bowls.
Frankly I see Barry's point. Why work for something you can never attain? He
was right to leave, and I wish him well in his future endeavors.

Of the names you mentioned, only Barry has delivered (for what he can do)
every single year of his career. But you can't win with just a superstar
running back.
