Am I the only one who thinks that the 97-98 Michigan Hockey team needs to do
a lot of improving? They don't shoot the puck enough, they are out of
postition too much, and 2 times they allowed Michigan State players to walk
out from the corner, and score. I'll be the first one to say that some of
the 10 new freshmen are very promising, but some of the upperclassmen need
to step it up a notch. THis year, there is no Brendan Morrison to help, or
no John Madden to score timely shorthanded goals. Sean Ritchlin needs to stop
puck-hogging, Greg Crozier needs to work, and Chris Fox needs to stay in
position more.

Yeah, I see in the paper that U-M has started the season 3-2-1 or thereabouts.
Well, a) it's early in the season, and b) even Michigan ain't gonna have
national champions or contenders *every* season.

They are 1-2-0 The win against Minnesota didn't count, lost one to colgate,
won won vs. colgate, lost 1 to those spartan freaks.

The team lost too many great players to be expected to vie for the CCHA
championship. The players they have are young and will definitely learn
and improve. We'll see later in the year how they are doing. I have
hopes for them, but nothing spetacular. Geez I wish i could get tickets
to the occasional Saturday night game, though.

I just checked your site. Nice list of the unique cheering style used by
Yost fans. You still have the MSU score in you're crawling banner. How
about UAF? The 97sched.html link 404s on me.

I'd like to see the list of one word insults that come after the C-Ya
cheer. Any clues?

After the band does a really cool dance number, have you seen the crowd
yell "DANCERS! SIEVE! DANCERS! SIEVE!" that's cool too.

I think the "you're welcome" response from the announcer only comes on
the last game of the season. At least that's the only time I've heard
it. I could be wrong on that. I don't go to enough games.

I could really use a pair of tickets to the game on 12/13 against
Western Michigan, if you (or anyone else) has extras.

I updated the banner with scores from Ferris. I think I have the Dancer-Sieve
up there, I'll check.

As far as the insults after C-ya, I'm not positive (and I'm also not trying
to offend anyone) are "fuck prick puss LOSE! Asshole Prick Cheater Bitch"
Like I said, I'm not positive. for many years, I thought it was "So the
assholes can lose! Asshole ..."
You're welcome comes at all exhibition games, whenever Michigan has a really
really big lead, and the last game of the season.

I'm trying to work with WTKA and their ISP to get a live Real Audio netcast
thing going, but that's not up yet.
I'm not sure yet about WMU tickets. I know my dad gets first priority, then
me, then other people. I'll try to get you 1 or 2.

(Thanks!)
I saw an ad that there were some single game tickets available for OSU in
early January. I'll be checking on that monday.

They were on versus BGSU from Bowling Green (Fox SPorts) but I only saw part
of the game. The part I saw looked like theye were not having much trouble
with BGSU, a near bottom-dweller in the CCHA.

Yeah, they did do a pretty good job vs. BGSU. TOwards the end, when Mike
Savard was on the bench for BG, and Marty Turco got the puck, I was kinda
hopin (and he said this in the post game interview) that he would fire it donw
the ice, and become not only the most penalized active goaltender in the NCAA
(56 pen. mins over 3 years) but the only one to score a goal.

They have also played some good hackey since then - sweep[ing western in close
games last weekend. Now on to the GLI. Can the beat MSU? most people don't
think so, but they are patying improved hockey for a bunch of youngsters and
Turco and Muckalt are playing very well indeed. Go BLue! C'Ya!

Well, I got too busy to spend any time here and let this thread die.
What a shame. If I quote resp:0

Everyone pretty much agreed that they needed to do a lot of improving,
but improve they certainly did. By the end of the season who would have
expected Bubba Berenzweig to have developed into such a force on the
ice?

Well, for those college hockey fans who just came out of a coma, the
Michigan Team lost to Ohio State (Ueah that's right - Ohio State, the
ex-doormat of the CCHA - more on them later) in the CCHA championship
semifinal, and then OSU lost to MSU in the final. Congrats to the
Spartans for winning the CCHA, but that was just the warmup.

In the NCAA regionals, held for the first time that I can ever remember
in our beloved Yost Ice Arena, Michigan beat Princeton, and then North
Dakota to go to the Frozen Four in Boston. Meanwhile OSU wreaked their
revenge, ousting MSU from the NCAA championships to join Michigan.

The Frozen four tournament was played in the Fleet Center in Boston. I
still have trouble picturing Boston Garden being lost to the wrecking
ball. The other two teams came out of the east regional...
New Hampshire and Boston College.

Michigan dominated New Hampshire in the semi, while OSU was beaten by
BC's speed. This set up the final gamne played tonight on ESPN. And what
a game it was. A game for the National championship.

Michigan matches up better against a fast teaqm like BC, but had trouble
early, and went down 1-0. They tied it in the second, but then gave up a
second goal on a power play, to make it 2-1 after 2. A lone Michigan
goal past the halfway mark in the 3rd period was all the scoring in
regulation time, leaving the championship to be decided in overtime.

(My wife and I used the break between the 3rd and 4th period to reset
all out clocks to Daylight time. But I don't know how easy it;ll be to
get to sleep tonight. We could loase a lot more than just one hour of
sleep.)

Michigan was at a disadvantage for more than 10 minutes f the 4th
period, nearly losing the game twice on shits that rang off the crossbar
or the post. Finally, the tide began to turn, and BC started to look
more tired than Michigan. A few minutes later, and just a few minutes
before the 4th period would have ended, Josh Langfeld took a pass from
behind the net and shot it in with a wrister from a bad angle. I don;t
think the BC goalie ever had any view of the shot.

They accomplished what the vaunted 96-97 squad was supposed to do.

response 13 of 14: Mark Unseen   Apr 6 02:50 UTC 1998

Yeah, anyone living in or playing for a Boston team, it's OK for you to refer
to as "shits" ! ;-) No, it was a fine game to spectate, all around. I had
a feeling after UM tied it fairly late in the 3rd that they were going to pull
it out. Of course, they took their time about it - 17+ minutes into OT! :-)
And they certainly could have lost it a few different times in OT. But that's
why OTs are so exciting - there's no "fairness" in it - the outcome will be
determined *like that* and it's all over but the weeping & the wooping.

So, as with the Red Wings last year, the Wolverines this year let another team
(MSU in this case) have the regular-season glory, but came up big, bigger than
expected, in the post-season.

Now let's not hear any (spoiled) UM fans whine about any lack of
championships, any time soon. 2 in one school year is pretty phenomenal!
