The Columbus Whalers?

I heard on the radio that it is very likely that the hartford whalers will
be moving to Columbus, Ohio. Wondering how many of you grexohioans would
support the Columbus Whalers?
If I were the Whalers, I'd move to Hawaii...great weather there and gosh darn
it, Hawaii needs a hockey team more than Columbus does! Besides, I dont think
there has ever been much whaling done in Columbus...

When the Quebec Nordiques and the Winnipeg Jets moved to Colorado and Phoenix
respectively, they did at least have the sense to change their names (i.e.
Colorado Avalanche and Phoenix Coyotes). If the Whalers move, I hope they
still have enough dignity to adopt a new name as well.

yeah but most sports teams arent sensible enough to change names...thats
why you have the L.A. Lakers (there are NO lakes in LA, they kept the
team name from when it was in Minnesota)...you also have the Utah Jazz,
though jazz clubs and utah go together like Michigan and oceans. You
have the Arizona Cardinals, even though the Cardinal species isnt found
in the desert or in that part of the country.
But maybe it doesnt matter. After all, Detroit has the Lions and
Tigers, even though exotic jungle animals arent indigenous to Michigan.

Also, when the Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas, they dropped the "North"
from their name.

The only way Columbus will ever get a team is if we pass atax increa
(or something like that) to pay for the arena. You'd think good ol'
Les Wexner would contribute, but no.
Richard, then explain this to me, Florida Panthers? Tampa Bay Lightning?
A team doesn't have to be named after something that is in the region.
Besides, I heard a long time ago, IF we got a team, they'd probably
be the "Columbus Explorers". <gag> (See a trend? Columbus Crew, Columbus Quest,
Columbus Explorers? Isn't it cute, enough to make one gag>

This item has been linked from Sports 57 to Intro 152.
Type "join sports" at the Ok: prompt for discussion of
Columbus Whalers, Columbus Clippers, Columbus Crew,
and even teams that aren't in Columbus.
And I'll point out to richard that Michigan has four
freshwater inland seas, so the "Michigan and oceans"
comment doesn't make a lot of sense. Not to mention that
we also have a team named the Whalers here - Hartford's
farm team plays in Plymouth, about half an hour's drive
from where I live.
Personally, I'd like to see them change the team name -
but to what? What is Columbus known for, besides cows? >8)

(Nooo!! Not the Buckeyes! Heh, they got creamed today in Basket ball,
but that's another story, Go Michigan. =)
I doubt Goron Gee would let a hockey team be named after them. OSU
is suposedly building a new building for just OSU's use that they
won't let any one else use. (Ex, the Crew)
Robh, Columbus is also known for Les Wexner and Jack Hannah. (Yeah..)

actually, they'll probably call it the Ohio somethingorothers...since it will
be the only NHL team in Ohio...how bout the Ohio Mudcats...or the
Ohio Superiors (after Lake Superior)

OK, richard is obviously kidding us this time. Nobody could
be stupid enough to think that a team in Ohio (which only
touches Lake Erie) would name a sports team after Lake Superior
(which only touches Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and
Ontario). Very funny! Thanks for the laugh!

oops,I got Eerie and Superior backwards then...which Ishouldnthave since the
only great lake Ive beenon is Lake Eerie.
I like tough names.....like The Ohio Smashers...The Ohio Thunderbolts...The
Ohio High Stickers (ok the nhl office mightnotliek that one :))

It's now the Carolina Whalers. Absolute Heresy. Isn't there a law against
playing hockey south of the Mason Dixon Line?

(Pst, remember Florida and Tampa Bay?) I'm still wincing over the fact
that Franklin County voted no for the arena. But, I'm not suprised
Hartford went to Carolina. I heard one of the biggest reasons they went
there instead of Columbus was a man named Gordon "I can bear with any
sports trying to take away fans from OSU football" Gee. I guess Gee wasn't
too thrilled with the prospect of another big sport coming to Columbus and
wasn't too receptive towards Karmanos. (Go fig)
On a brighter note, if we don't get an arena by '00, we can say goodbye to
the Columbus Crew, and offically rename ourselves, Cowtown. (Who, me
bitter? Nahh...)

I've been to Columbus. It IS a cowtown with freeways.
What I would like to see most of in Ohio? A viable north south route
with limited access, like I-75. When I was through there in Jan of 96,
there was just a 2 lane divided highway, which is indicative of a cowtown

BTW, I heard that if Hartford levies a "buyout fee" or whatever you call it,
the owner was gonna stay the last year in Hartford so he wouldn't have to pay
it. Heard any more about that?
