OK. I have doped out the World cup situation. The first round ended
with the USA and Sweden winning their respective divisions.
They thus earn a bye in the second round.
Canada beat Germany in the second round Thursday to advance to the 3rd round
(semi-finals). Russia beat Finland (convincingly 5-0) to advance on Friday.
So the third round began tonight. No world cup games have been carried by any
american TV, broadcast or cable as far as I know. Fortunately for us living
near the border, we can pick up the CBC broadcasts.
The first semifinal pitted Canada against Sweden. This game was played tonight
in Philadelphia, and ended less than a half hour ago, as Paul Coffee of Canada
rushed up the ice after Canada nearly gave up the game on four great chances
by the Swedes. Coffee dished off to Theoren Fleury, who scored as the puck
bounced over Tommy Salo's outstreched arm.
This happened with 12.5 seconds left in the second overtime period.
It was a very exciting game, although I missed a great deal of the beginning
of it because we follishly had college football on the tune. Doh!
Tomorrow The USA will face Russia at 8PM, The game WILL BE CARRIED by CBC.
The winner will play for the cup against Canada in a three game series to
begin on Tuesday.
I will be rooting for USA, but it's a hard call, with all those RedWings on
the Russian team. The Russians played and beat the USA earlier in the
tournament in a game in Detroit, in which it was not at all clear who the home
team was. Sunday's 8PM game will be in Ottawa, and there the USA will have
a stronger backing from the crowd, I'll warrant, than in Detroit.
All 4 of these teams in the semifinals are tremendous ice hockey teams.
U S A ! U S A ! U S A ! etc.

Well, last night's Game 1 of the finals was a classic to me. USA was down
by one goal with under a minute to play. They pulled the goalie and
poured on the offense. Canada cleared the puck, but the guy went for the
goal and missed, resulting in a icing call. With under 10 seconds left,
the USA scored when one of Canada's players accidentally pushed the puck in
to the net :) 3-3 at the end of regulation. In overtime the two teams were
still very intense as the action was non-stop. But, Red Winger Steve Yzerman
go the puck, came down the left side, fired a wrist shot on a bad angle.
Mike Richter got a glove on it, but the puck still rolled in to the net and
Canada won game 1 4-3 in overtime. Next game will be played in Canada, but
hopefully the USA will rebound.

I really wish they would show the games around here. (It would save me from
sitting on ESPNet's chat room for three hours..) That way I could see how
great they were. Unbelieveably I think they are showing the game
tonight. (It's a miracle!) GO USA!

USA! USA! USA! Hahaha..I love it when we win! :) Another great game
game 3 was :) I must say that I enjoyed watching the fast paced games..
a lot better than the slow NHL games. Action was non-stop, but the
US came from behind to tie and win it in the third.
The only thing that I really disliked was when some of the fans were booing
when they announced, and began to play, the US National Anthem. That was
uncalled for.

Yeah there has been a problem with that..I was watching CBC one nite for the
games and Don Cherry had made a remark that that was the most distastefull
thing a fan could do...It only degrades one's country...I could never imagine
doing that..it just rude....
Did anyone catch the Wings first preseason game Sunday nite....WooHoo...
Hockey time BABY!!!! Erikkson looked really good as well as Pushor..and
Knublefrom right here at the U of M looked fantastic....

World cup was great. This item is not really of any further use, now, though.
The NFL should start soon. That's what I'm waiting for. THat and to see who
actually puts on a Redwing uniform this year. This probly should go in another
item.
How often do they play the world cup, anyway? every 2 years?

were still going to play it that year, since the Oympics and all that..
