Detroit Red Wings - 95-96 season
|
Oct 14 06:24 UTC 1995 |
They started the season with a dud. Vernon looked bad in that opener.
Tonight they came home for the home-opener and beat Edmonton 9-0.
"Thrashed" is a better word. Also, tonight they put up all the banners
from last year's successes. It would have been a lot of fun to go to the Joe.
Meanwhile, Osgood got the Goose egg. I know Edmonton is having its problems,
but I'm still impressed. I have more hope for him than I do for Vernon,
who seems to play pretty well and then (just when you least expect it)
he lets in a weak goal.
What about all the trade rumors? Are they nuts?
It'll be a bad day for the Wings if they unload Ciccarelli.
If they have to trade him or Steve Yzerman, I'd rather keep Dino.
Better yet, keep both. What do you think?

I agree. Yzerman has told the press that he wanted to go to a competitive
team. That certainly doesn't fit the Ottawa Senators very well. The Detroit
teams have a history of doing really stupid things like when the Pistons broke
up the winning team instead of paying a little more money. Oh well.

Well, the wings didn't look very competitive when they play NJ Thursday.
I am beginning to wonder about Vernon. He is not consistent enough to
make me happy. I like Osgood, though.

Does Detroit need another center? Come on I think the Sheppard/Larinov trade
sucks. We trade away a 50 goal scorer for an aging guy who just happened to
help his team upset Detroit in previous playoffs. I dont know. Does anyone
else think Bowman is gonna get thrown out of town by the fans if he keeps this
up?

I'm not happy either. Larionov is the "L" of "KLM", as an indicator of how
old he is. He scored tonight, but the Wings still lost.

I just read this item with the benefit of 61/13 hindsight. Larionov can
stay. Bowman, too.

I have consistently been amazed at how effective older players have turned
out for the wings. In hindisght, I have a lot of crow to eat. Not only did
Larionov turn out well so far, but Fetisov (who is older I believe) and the
biggest mistake I made in this vein, which was disparaging the amount of
benefit the team could derive from Paul Coffey. These older players are
clearly central to the incredibly good record-breaking 95-96 season that the
Wings are finishing up right now. It should lead to the Stanley Cup.
In future years, the Wings will have to bring up some youngsters quickly to
replace retiring veterans, but it has been a great deal of fun watching
these talented veterans skate this year.

Another thing that should help is the fact that the Devils failed to make
the Playoffs. <set snide mode off>
Actually, I think that the Wings are a stronger team this year than last,
and if they don't make any major errors, they should go to the Cup.

I don't think that the fact that the Devils arent going to the playoffs this
year would make a diffeence...N.J. ( the upper management) as made the biggest
mistake in getting rid of and dismantling their cup team...They had absolutely
no chance this year and it is nobodydy's fault but the front offices and the
ownership!

Also, at the time the New Jersey Devils were beating the crap out of our
beloved Red Wings, there were reports that the team was going to relocate to
Nashville, Tennessee.

Wings get win #62, and wait for Wednesday's opener. Since St Louis got a
point by tieing and Winnipeg got clobbered by the mighty ducks (who are out)
the Jets fall back to 8th and draw the Wings in the first round.

Wings win both in Detroit and go to Winnipeg for game 3 SUnday afternoon.
THey looked real shaky in the first two periods of game 1, but came on strong
to win game 1 easily. game 2 was a shutout, and much less in doubt.
Osgood started and played both games. Will likely start game 3 as well.
The fans are plenty happy about this.
Khabibulin, the Winnipeg Goalie, is an exellent one, who needs Winnipeg to
be a better team before he will be able to beat the Wings. He just about
singlehandedly brought the Jets up into the playoff picture.
Is Sunday afternoons game on the tube? I guess I'll find out in tomorrow's
paper.

THanks. I found that out Sunday morning, and then watched the game.
The Wings were caught off guard by a very fired-up Winnipeg team.
They looked really flat and lost game 3. Osgood was benched because of
some minor physical problem, as a precaution.

That's because I was tuned in. I have a theory about certain sporting events
and me. Nothing good ever happens when I'm watching. I won't do that again.
