Moeller resigns! Mark Unseen   May 5 06:12 UTC 1995

Gary Moeller resigned in the wake of that incident in Southfield.

Do you think that was appropriate, or overreaction on his part?

Sad to see it happen, especially after seeing what Bobby Knight and Woody
Hayes have been allowed to get away with for so long. Thank God we never
had to put up with those clowns in an official capacity at the University
of Michigan!

Gary had to resign. The incident at the bar was overblown by the
press, and I don't think that was right, but once it was done, it would
have been difficult for him to enforce drug and alcohol discipline on his
players, and it would have been difficult for him to concentrate on
football with the press, and he would have been a constant embarrassment
to the university.
I have a lot of respect for Moeller after this incident, and after
his resignation. He did what was best under the circumstances. I don't
think he'll have any problem getting a job as a football coach somewhere
else. I wish him the best.

<srw comes back to 'sports' after vanishing for a month>

Jep said what I would have said, but I wasn't here to say it.
He couldn't possibly have stayed or been allowed to try, for that matter.
I don't think the press did the right thing with that tape either,
but there are bound to be two sides to that issue.

I think Carr will be a better coach, from a won-lost point of view.

And Carr has an opportunity no one else has ever had: a 13-0 season.
No, really, I'm ok. Stop pinching me, I don't need a dose of reality.
Let me dream while I still can....

I like it better when they start low in the polls.
It's going to be warm tomorrow. I'm bringing lots of sun block.

I think an important reason that they are ranked low is the quarterback
situation. No one has any experience. Inexperienced quarterbacks often
make big game-turning mistakes

If it should happen to turn out that one of the two quarterbacks doesn't
have this kind of problem, the teams stock will improve greatly.
Michigan has two very young QBs with lots of potential. Driesbach is
very fast, and Griese is a terrific passer. Both are tall enough to have
good visibility. It will all turn on how many mistakes they make.

Of course it would be better if they could find a tall QB who was very
fast *and* a terrific passer, and who also didn't make mistakes :-)

I suspect that Griese will not start at Michigan again. His football
skills may improve, but his time may have already come and gone.

it will be an interesting season...do grexers ever get together to watch the
games?
srw
response 11 of 16: Mark Unseen   Jun 16 15:56 UTC 1996

Actually, no. Many grexers think that football is something that was designed
to make the traffic a pain just when they want to go on a GrexWalk.

A small number of Grexers do really love football, and go to all of the
U-M football games. We have never found each other in the stadium.

(Actually, Meg Geddes is the only one I know for sure, besides myself,
but i imagine there have to be some others in that 107000)

Speaking of the football stadium, have you seen the construction at the
entrance? It looks like they;re building a concrete wall.

I'm a season ticket holder since 1973. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi:

Michigan Football isn't the most important thing.
        It's the only thing.

I'll be at all the home games again this year, plus Northwestern and OSU.

Since 1972 for me. Actually since 1966 with one year off (1971).
I'll be at all the home games.

Yeah. It was nice to have a QB without cement feet. We'll have to play a lot
better against Colorado. First we get a week off.
