Welcome to the sports Cf, 2nd edition
|
Jun 30 20:23 UTC 1994 |
Welcome to the 2nd edition of the Sports Conf. I hope that this conference
will be one that can discuss all aspects of the sports world, from the
athletes themselves, to the games that they play.
I for one, feel that we place far too much importance on football, baseball
basketball and hockey. Grown men recieving obscene saleries for being
profiecient at a child's game will, in my opinion, lead to the destruction
of our decent society. Maybe you feel different. Let's talk about it.
and remember, if the kick it, roll it, hit it with a bat, catch it with a
glove, it probably matters to this conference. Don't be shy.
Oh, one more thing.
Please welcome Greg Fry (canis) to the F-w staff. I hope that he turns
out to be a very competent F-w.

and above all, boxers...

These athletes recieve so much money, because the public which is so offended
by their salaries gives it to them. Boycot the sport if you think the athletes
make too much. Maybe stop watching football and become interested in mountain
biking, where the athletes (except a few of course) are poor.

My opinion is that baseball players are very selfish. They get paid millions
of dollars, and they still think they should be paid more. Is that right?

I'm sure everyone has heard about the baseball strike set for Aug. 12.
I think this is all because of the players and owners greed. They already
make 100 times a teachers salary and they want to make 200 times that, right
Mark.

Lets let congress remove baseballs antitrust exemption.....then the players can
sue n sue if the owners try to unilaterally impose a salary cap. That way the
players will have more leverage and wont feel like they have to strike as an
only report

It's simply supply and demand. If you have a favorite sport other than the
big four, and it costs but peanuts, keep it to yourself and enjoy. Dread
the day when it becomes popular enough for the networks!

If people are willing to pay the ticket pri then I see no reason why
athletes shouldn't be able to make as much as they do. I don't read about
complaints regarding how much singers and actors make, so give the athletes
a break!

I agree with the athletes....(NHL)....thre is definitely money out there to be
had....here in St. Louis, the Blues charge $27 for the "cheap seats" up
to $55 for the excellent seats...tell me in a 42 game home schedule
(normally) that the Blues, and other NHL franchises aren't raking in the money
even with the current level of salaries and minimally U.S. exposure!

There was a surge of interest in soccer in the USA when the World Cup
was played here. It seems to have died down now, but soccer is growing
in the US. It just has a very long way to go.
