The party. Mark Unseen   Sep 17 23:49 UTC 1994

you're throwing a small party that you didn't invite one of your friends
to. the friend calls during the party and asks what you are doing. the
friend can't tell what is happening on the other end of the line.

do you tell your friend that you're having a party?

If I don't want them there, but don't want to spoil the friendship, I
don't think I would. What would the point be?

I say that I'm talking to some friends and will call back later. The
word "party" would send a "nyah, nyah" message that wouldn't really
be accurate.

It would depend on why I didn't invite the friend ... I don't like
parties myself, the only one (as such) I've ever put on was a birthday
party for a five-year-old and I found it a nerve-wracking experience.
I certainly didn't invite any of my friends to it & I would have
been happy to tell them about it if they called in medias res!

Tell the friend I am throwing a business party (or whatever it is) and am
engaged for the evening.
