The word on the tip of the tongue Mark Unseen   Aug 22 03:41 UTC 1994

(you want to use a word, but you can't think of it. The only words you
can come up with are pale substitutes.)

(do you try to find a thesaurus to help you?)

 Why not?

Unless it's a pain to find, using a thesaurus never has negative
ramifications.

I like to describe the word I am trying to think of (assuming verbal
conversation) and get the listner to help me remember the word. Thsis is
especially effective with annoying people. They get tired and go away faster.

no, I usually can't find one. if it's a paper, I usually start asking anyone
(friendly) who's around, otherwise, I do without but tell the other person
about the really cool word I _could_ have used...

yes. Wordstar has one built in, so it's easy.

Actually I've rarely found a thesaurus-book *useful* -- very
*interesting*, sometimes, but the word or phrase I'm looking for
isn't there. I prefer to consult a dictionary, either the printed
form or the minds of my family around me (it worked better before
I married, but Dave is sometimes similar-minded enough to help).

Considering I have a thesaurus sitting next to my computer, yes, I
would look it up, unless I was talking with my boyfriend in which case,
he can usually figure out what I'm trying to say and will come up with
the word for me... :)

What moral quandry is involved? What is wrong with the use of a reference
material designed for such a purpose. Give me something deeper.

yep...it's happened to me before. Sometimes it's easier to get a friend's
help though if a thesaurus isn't available.
