Did you hear about...? Mark Unseen   Mar 13 20:29 UTC 1995

What do you do when someone spreads a rumour about you around without bothering
to verify it? This person has effectively destroyed almost all connection with
the people you know. And keep in mind that this rumour is the type that if you
ignore it, people assume you're guilty, and if you respond, people think that
you're making up excuses for yourself.

Can you figure out who started it? If so, offer them a knuckle sandwich
unless they counter-circulate the truth about the situation. Otherwise
(if it's true that speaking or not speaking will get you in trouble), you
have to simply grin and bear it. Your true friends will realize after
awhile that you didn't do whatever it was that was the rumor.

In the first, I'd forgive them, that's the christian thing to do, then
sue the shit out of them for libel.

Isn't that contradictory?

 It only seems that way.

(Please explain why it's not, omni. You have piqued my interest.)

Ok, I have a pretty bizarre outlook on the world, and a generally
forgiving and tolerant nature. However, I have a very dark and black
anger that I reserve only for those who deserve it.

Ah, so your whole *personality* is contradictory. I get it now!
Mine is contradictory, too. 8*)

(What was that original subject, again?)

The original posting didn't say whether the rumor was *true*,
and this makes a big difference. If it's not, I would offer
some comment like "And the moon is made of green cheese!"

If people asked me directly if it were true, Id asnwer honestly.
If my friends are true, I'd let them dispel the myths.

No, the rumor is *NOT* true! <But, of course, no one bothered to ask me...>

Proudly boast the truth of the rumor to a fanatic and constantly
embellishing degree. Develop it until it is absurd and unbelievable.
Bring it up constantly in conversation with any gossipmongers until
they are sick and tired of hearing about the stupid rumor that
couldn't possibly be true by that time. This also guarantees that
no one will ever start a rumor about you again.

They have to be brave enough to tell me the rumor first; If they cant tell
me the rumor maybe the connections should have been severed and maybe they
werent really friends. By not telling me they perpetuate it so I cant sue for
defamation of character or slander.
