by CORDELL GARRETT
I would like to have Star Trek fans comment on what series you like
the most. I just saw the two hour premier of Voyager Monday night.
One word, excellent!! I especially like their crew, their different.
Deep
Space Nine is cool also. I would welcome your comments.

I think its too early to tell about Voyager, but it did look promising.
It did have the feel the TNG and DS9. Of course, there are those who don't
like that feel so much, I suppose.

I really dislike Janeaway's voice. The actor's perfomance is very
wooden. Maybe this will play out as an intentional part of the
character. Or maybe she's just a bad actor.

I have been watching Star Trek for as long as I can remeber now. I must admit
thawhile I liked DS9, it seemed, well, not quite Trek, you know? I think
Voyager shows promise. It returns a little more that we all came to enjoy
from Star Trek. Hmm...maybe

The only 'bad' thing I saw was after the ship gets yanked 70,000 light years
and the crew is trying to figure out what's happened Janeway's hair is
down and 'messed up'. There is a cut away and then we see her heading to I
think engineering and her hair is just fine.
Seems like a bad mistake for an otherwise decent show.

Mary, "wooden" commanders aren't real? The only Navy admiral I've ever
met was just like that--wooden.
Perhaps its a way of saying that women are still having to work harder
than men are to get the same positions. Yecchh.
Then again, Mr. Picard seemed pretty distant many times, too.

Probably most captains have to adjust their hair once in a while; though
Picard never seemed to have that problem. :)

Hey Peacefrog, you think you got it bad with these guys.. how long d'ya think
before all these reach me in the little ole UK :(
Then again... I guess I'll get to know which ones not to stay in for, if
everyone posts which are good and which not.. hmm, dilemmas, dilemmas.. ;)

When do you think you'll see it? I've never thought before about the
lag in getting USA shows to europe.

I was disappointed in the first Voyager episode. It seems to be contrived
from a mish-mash of other adventures, with stereotyped crises, and some
very awkward segues - but I expect to watch at least a few more episodes.
Oh yes - I attributed the character Janeway to be a method-acting
creation based upon Katherine Hepburn.

Shameless Comment- you can tell who watchs the show because it's
Star Trek and who watches it hoping for good plots and good
acting of, say, your average network drama.

Re: The captian's hair-
I don't remember seeing her fix it, but she may very well have. I think
the problem I had was why would a captain be fumbling with her hair
when a nice number of her crew were dead and another nice part of them
injuered? Seemed out of place to me.

I saw her fix her hair and it did not distract from her command as it was
more reflex than intentional. I like her voice and it was nice when Janeway
smiled. Sometimes I wonder if Riker had some special futuristic gel for his
hair.

It's pretty bad when the topic of discussion is about her hair! But I
will admit she did have an annoying voice. Sounds like she smokes.
It must be nice to be thrown out of starfleet academy and be a
renegade and get field promotions right up to first officers and
lt. commander. That seems a little far fetched. I wonder what kind
of crew compliment she actually still commands? 10 people out of 110?
I do think the holographic doctor is cool!! In regards to discussions
about Star Trek in general which was the heading before the hair thing
I think that would cool.

There was recently a special on PBS called 'The Science of Star Trek'.
If any one hasn't seen it; pity. It was good.

Re: the 'hair' thing.
For some reason I remember it. It got knocked all around in the crash,
which is what you would expect. She apparently has fairly long hair,
which you would want *out* of your way when you're trying to do
something important. So, in the next scene, when she's running down
the corridor to engineering to help fix the frazdoodle that needs
re-cabobulating you can see her shoving her hair back up *while* she's
running. As someone else said, it seemed like a reflex action and
seemed entirely appropriate.

As for her voice, I've seen Kate MUlgrew in many tv shows over the years.
She's always had a very throaty voice, and it sounds like her natural voice.
I kind of like it. I also like the fact that she's also probably the first
Sfemail ST character that couldn't double as a fashion model. She *looks*
and *acts* like a commander.

response 20 of 118: Mark Unseen   Jan 21 01:20 UTC 1995

I would describe her voice as nasal not throaty. Demi Moore has
a throaty voice. Lauren Bacall has a throaty voice. Kate Mulgrew
wishes she had a throaty voice. ;-)

Ok, point taken. But it *is* her real voice.

And she does have that wooden feeling of a commander.
