Scifi Channel, or a vidscifinut had a wet dream and decided to turn it into a commercial venture. Mark Unseen   Sep 21 05:01 UTC 1992

Anyone going to get the "SCIFI CHANNEL"?

It sounds, like, totally awesomme duude!

24 hours a day of Lost in Space, Battlestar Galactica, ST:TNG, etc ad
infinitum.

Call your cable company and request it!

It's coming to Columbia Cable in Ann Arbor. If you tune to the channel
that's going to carry it, you get a countdown -- at the bottom of the
screen, the number of days, hours, minutes, and seconds to go is
continuously updated, against a constantly changing surrealistic
background.

Lost in Space? Battlestar Galactica? Well, I can do without those, but
hopefully they'll do 50s scifi flicks, Outer Limits, and (dare I hope?)
Space Patrol.

And they're not going to bring it to Ypsi until October 1st. Time for
a letter to the FCC, I think...

I highly doubt that a letter to the FCC will help. They can't force a
cable company to carry any particular channel. Feel lucky that you will
get it on October 1st. They didn't have to pick it up at all.

It will probably start October 1st as that is when the cartoon channel
starts to broadcast and they didn't want to have to add things twice.

No, you misunderstand. CC is moving *slow* in putting the new channels
in the entire viewing area. Someone must have kissed some butt to get
AA to move first. They will get the premiere of the Sci-Fi channel as
soon as it starts (Sept 24?). Us backwater types outside of AA have
to suffer.

I called CC last night and pleaded with them to add me before the startup.
They said they doubted the techs would do it, but they would "leave them
a note". I'll probably try to keep bothering them over the next few
days if nothing happens.

It really is just a matter of typing a few commands in a keyboard, you
know. All the wires are set and ready. I've had them turn on the
Movie Channel while I talked to them on the phone. Took about 5 seconds
for them to flip the switch.

From what is listed in this weeks Ann Arbor News TV Listings, I don't think
you'll be missing too, terribly much. From 8 pm Thursday through Sunday
night/Monday morning they will be showing _Star Wars_ at least 4 times (they
don't show the listings for weekdays so I don't know what they will be
showing from 6 am to 6 pm Friday). It will be show from 8:00-10:30 and from
11:00-1:30 on both Thursday and Saturday nights (that's right, twice a night
separated by a half-hour show called "Sci-Fi"). There are large chunks that
are labeled 'Paid Program', whatever that means (we haven't figured out yet
whether they mean Pay for View programming or one of those 11/2 hr commercials,
since they're blocked in 1/2 hr segments - from 3:30am-8:00am Saturday, for
instance - I am tending to think that they are the latter. I sure hope not.

There are a few interesting old TV series that are listed, a number of them
will be shown twice in the Thurs-Sun segment that is listed for this week.
So far it sounds a bit disappointing.

That's not the point. This is an *event*! And I'm going to miss it. :(

I'm looking forward to Captain Scarlet! Anyone else know about this one?
I was surprised my friend in Boston hadn't heard of the more popular
supermarrionation work "Thunderbirds Are Go!"

I saw several episodes of Captain Scarlet when channel 9 from Windsor
showed them on Sunday mornings. I loved them!

It's here! 8pm EST. Previews look interesting. Channel 51 on Columbia Cable.

Weird. I came home from work yesterday to find all these new channels!
live in Ypsi - wasn't expecting anything for another week or so. Maybe CC's
not so bad...

What part of Ypsi? It may not be long...

I live on College Place - a couple blocks from EMU. And I still have all
the new channels. Am I special, or does anyone else in Ypsi have the new
channels.

Enlightenment spreading eastward like an oil slick...

Bad metaphor. Or was that a simile. Bad in any case...

Well, we Ann Arbor types were able to watch the switching on of the
SciFi channel at 8 p.m. last Thursday. Unfortunately, the first
thing they showed was this creaky old warhorse called "Star Wars".

Got to the Hewitt/Packard area of Ypsi on Sunday morning. Very nice.

Well, the SciFi channel seems to have gotten past "Star Wars" (real
tacky special effects in that one) and into some good stuff like
"It Came from Outer Space", a spiffy 1952 scifi thriller based on
some Ray Bradbury material. It was originally filmed in 3-D, though
not shown in that format on the SciFi channel.

Or howbout "Time Tunnel" . Weird pre-show stuff, but otherwise, very
entertaining.

What it means to me is that I have to get a converter box now to see
A&E. I've been watching it elsewhere though. Forgot about that time
travel to Atlantis show. Got it confused a moment with the one where
the guy has to pocket watch that says "Good" or "Bad" or something until
he cleans things up.

When are the cartoons on?

What time is it supposed to be on?

For anyone who's interested, on USA, at 7pm everyday, there are past episodes
of Quantum Leap.

Voyagers on Sunday at 11:00 at least. They were saving Roosevelt from
Billy the Kid this morning.
