Doctor Who!!!

Is there anyone interested in Dr Who here? All the messages I've found are
several years old!

There probably are several Dr. Who fans, or Whovians, or whatever the
heck they call themselves.. It's hard to find episodes broadcast in
most of the U.S. these days, however, so most won't have much to discuss..

I'm not exactly a fan, in that I have no desire to own a Doctor Who scarf,
but I did used to like watching it. Doesn't seem all that much left to talk
about these days.

One problem is that old episodes are not being rerun on TV much these
days. Another problem is that the last regular episode of the series
was made in 1989. That's a long time ago! However, there are active
Dr. Who related news groups, web sites, etc. out there on the 'net.

Used to be (say 10 years ago) Dr. Who played on weekend nights on local PBS
stations, and was usually considered a big fund-raiser during pledge drives.
Then I guess everybody who cared had seen all the episodes, and PBS stopped
showing it.

Dr. Who episodes are coming or are on DVD. New interest may
come about.
PBS was probably outbid by Sci-Fi channel for showing rights.
But now, SF channel does not show them either. It would be hard
to re-kindle the PBS interest, but it may be worth trying.

I don't know about anyone here, but there are still people who watch Dr Who
and discuss the episodes, upcoming releases, reconstructions, etc. Does
anyone here have a favourite episode or Doctor?

I liked the John Pertwee (3rd?) Doctor. Never could quite figure out why 4th
Doctor (can't remember the actor's name, but he's the one with the long scarf
and the "jelly baby" candy) was so popular.

I vaguely suspect that that was Tom Baker. Boy, as Who fans we are pathetic.

Well, just given the time and chance to watch 12 hours of
Dr. Who versus watching 12 hours of a recent show, like Farscape,
I would pick Farscape. Not saying something bad about the old
episodes, but I have found that supporting the current running
shows is needed today.
I liked the big pockets Doctor, probably John Pertwee, though
most of the Who shows I seen first where Tom Baker episodes. Really
liked Baker's sidekick, Leila(?).

I think people liked the 4th Doctor becuase he was cast in some of the best
stories (some written by Douglas Adams) and had some of the best lines. I
did enjoy the 3rd Doctor though. I think his Venusian Aikido was fantastic.
Up walks an unwitting villain and "HAI!", he's unconscious on the ground!

And I would go with the more cynical explanation (and one that holds
up well when asking British/international fans who their favorite Doctor is)
that the Fourth Doctor was the favorite of most US viewers because he was
the first one they saw.
(I myself break the rule and prefer the Seventh Doctor, who would have
been, well, the seventh one I saw. >8)

I think there's some discussion of that movie somewhere in here. Overall it
would have been a decent intro to a new series, but it ended with the pilot
movie.

Which is too bad. I liked that movie, even though a lot of fanatic fans did
not.

The movie I saw had Paul McGann as the Doctor. Roberts was the Master.
I saw Philip Segal, writer and producer of that movie, at a con. He was a
really good guest becase he's such a huge fan and worked so hard attempting
to put a new Dr Who series on the air. It was fun to hear about the sets and
props. Heartbreaking to hear about how it didn't catch on after the pilot
movie and the beautiful sets had to be destroyed. Segal is now a producer
on Earth: Final Conflict.

I didn't care for the FOX Dr. Who movie too much. I didn't like McGann in the
role of the Doctor all that much.
