Do you have any role in emergency management or public safety?
Are you in a volunteer or a paid position (or both)?

I wouldn't exactly call it emergency management, but I do some volunteer
work for SOS. That's a community crisis intervention center. Most of
what we do is in the background.

I am chairman of the UM College of Engineering Safety Committee (this
does not require rushing off to accidents), and I am a backup person for
a cave rescue call-down. I'd like to find a niche for using my ham radio
hobby for public service, but have only chased bicycles, so far O=O.

I've expanded my involvement by getting RACES (Radio Amateur Civil
Emergency Service) certified, and have just completed "basic"
SKYWARN spotter training. These activities have an Item in the
radio conference, though there would be some point of linking items
here if a amateur radio Item were considered desirable.

I have recently joined an American Red Cross Disaster Action Team, with
the Washtenaw chapter. My first 'run' was at midnight to an apartment fire
in a low-income section of Ypsilanti. We provided for comfort and housing
of the family that was evicted by the fire (no injuries). My second 'run'
was to open a Warming Shelter, also in Ypsi, in an area where power had
been out for three days after the recent ice storm. If you think you'd be
interested in serving the community in this fashion, sign up for the next
Disaster Action Team Orientation on 21 May, 6-9 p.m. (call the Red Cross
Community Emergency Services department at 971-5300 for more information).
