Renaissance clothing

Ok, I need some help with Renaissance costuming. Specifically, what kind of
footwear did women wear then?????

I assume jasmine meant the Renaissance Festival, either here in MI or
elsewhere. You can shorten that to "Ren Fest" or "Mud Fest"...

Amen. I got caught in the mud flats. Not a pretty sight. I have no idea
about footwear. Sorry.

I've been wearing (the last couple years) a pair of rubber-soled leather
sandals purchased from a vendor at Ren Fest (he claims the design is
way old...like Roman, but was in use through Renaissance). Unfortunately,
when Ren Fest is Mud Fest (like it usually is), sandals don't work
very well (unless you like hop, skip, and jump type of movement ;).
I think if I had the $$, I'd opt for a pair of leather boots (high).

Since I work fest (rain or shine...and believe it or not some of the best
days are the rainy ones!) I not only need sturdy shoes/boots, but comfortable
ones! I'll probably end up with high leather boots, but I didn't know if
that was all the women wore then.

Sorry...yes, I meant at the Mud Fest! =) I wear a pair of high
leather boots, but since of the rain, and because of the place that I work,
Dueling BUckets, they get really wet. I would suggest water-proofing anything
that you do decided to get. I didn't, and my boots are in really bad shape
now.

I picked up some suede short boots for wearing with garb. They are very
simple, comfortable, and I'd think would work well with any time. They
are rubber soled, but suede on top, come about halfway up the shin.
I picked them up a Meijers about 2yrs ago, now.

That sounds like what i have..., but like I said, if you want them
to last, and not get too wet, then have them water proofed..

I believe, in the Rennaisance, they were still using pattens (wooden clogs)
over slippers for walking the muddy streets. Remember the old Dr. Schole's
sandals? they are fairly similar to simple pattens. Also, by the Rennaisance
in some places boots had heels- think of Cavelier boots. For dry wear, I guess
the basic standard is china flats. I used to have a pair of "elf boots"- those
high suede fringy things, but I got tired of how hard they are to get on and
off and how hot they were. Also, the fringe is kind of silly- try cutting it
off and gluing on a solid border.

Jasmine, lots of people can loan you clothes. If you "finger" me, you'll get
my phone # and I can see who might have something your size. Or you can
cobble together beginner garb out of a long skirt, top and vest or a long
caftan and belt or something. I'm a bit short on time, and will be leaving
on the 20th or so, but I'll be glad to help as best I can. Call me.

As far as ren footwear: Are you interested in what you can wear at Ren Fest
ans fit in, or are you looking for answers regarding what was actually
worn during that time period.
As far as the Event: There is an SCA event sceduled for July 23rd. All are
welcome, yet you are supposed to be in period costume and an attempt at
period personality. (this is not difficult, and is not enforced, but an
attempt is asked for :-)
They may be talking about the Art fair which is coming soon
Or maybe the AA Medieval Festival. (Does that still happen?)

What I was going to say was if you aren't too pressed on time, I do sew (some-
what) and can always work with someone on costumes.

There used to be a fabric store in the area called Piece Goods, but they
closed some time ago, much to the chagrin of SCA garb-folk. Well, there
is hope! The Piece Goods stores in Flint did not close, and they are
having a SuperSale on Jan. 28th. I am coordinating an expedition to Flint
on Saturday, and would be happy to take someone, or tell people how to
get there. The trip to Flint takes approx. an hour (slightly less, really),
and if you wish, doesn't put you very far from the outlet malls at
Birch Run.
