Good Morrow, all. I'm actually from out of town (way out of town), but have
enjoyed reading posts here. My name is Mordock von Rugen, from Al Barran (MKA
Albuquerque). I was wondering if you folks did much in the way of unit
fighting (as in organized units, rather than just groups of people roughly in
the same area). I just moved from Caid to OUtlands, and have found that there
is little in the way of really organized nit fighting here. Was the discipline
and organization I found in Caid a fluke? Say it aint so and drop me line,
'kay?
Good Day to you all.

Can you explain a bit more about unit fighting (to a person just
starting out with SCA-type activities)?

I'm originally from the Province of the Mountain Freehold, in the East
Kingdom (Vermont, mundanely). We were (are) know for small-unit tactics.
We also tend to generate unbelted champions and masters at arms rather than
knights. I think there's a connection. It may also be cultural- sort of the
heritage of the Green Mountain Boys and all that- regionalism and independent
thinking rather than personal glory or blind (whole army) loyalty. I've been
scouting in woods battles for about 8 or 9 years now (at least), not being
strong or aggressive enough to fight. I'm not sure which kingdom makes
better use of scouts, but I prefer scouting for the East. That may be partly
due to the enduring bonds of loyalty and to familiarity. This help?
Welcome to grex, mordock.

Well.....
Different groups define "unit tactics" quite differently. From a mob that
knows each other, to a dressed line of shields performing 'wheel lefts' and
'slide rights' with the best of them. The spectrum between thes extremes is
vast. But no, Caid is not the only place that keeps their fighters is close
order. Hey Kent, if you would like to show up at STAC (Student Theatre Arts
Complex) on Sun May 8th; I would be glad to show you what we do.
Yo Kami, I once heard a King I met refer to Masters as Chivalry Lite...
All the priviledge, half the resposibility...:-)

STAC is a building with a loading dock. It is with other buildings found
on the edge of the Crisler Arena parking lot. Does that do it?

Yeah, that helps; let's me know which city it's in :) That's not
too far from where I live; could probably walk it.

re:#3- What king? I like it- not sure some folks would. Actually, accurate
for some: just happy stick jocks with baldrics. For others, they seem to
make an ongoing decision about loyalty to a given king and hold strong
personal ties with their own teachers, novices, sword brothers, etc. Some are
also a lot less stuffy and into "privilege" than many knights. Not that I
know anyone who'd turn down a "chivalry only" parking space if such a thing
existed...

Are you planning to go? Perhaps what I was thinking of is the Midrealm
anniversary in Chicago. :) Did anyone go to that? Is anyone planning
to go to the Spring Fling in Northville?
