Publicity Updates Mark Unseen   Jun 27 21:18 UTC 1992

Well, a couple versions of the GREX flier of the week went out to the JCC sale.
We have at least one more version being designed, thanks to John Remmers!
and several more are now on the drafting table. If you've volunteered to
post fliers you can expect to hear from me by e-mail in the next few weeks.

We passed out close to 200 at the JCC Sale Sunday. I still have
some left over, and plan to pass them out. I'm going to put a
bunch in the free literature rack at the library, for example.

that's a good place.

personally, i'm wary of ever _forcing_ a flier for anything on anybody. most
folks who don't take one voluntarily won't read it--they'll just throw it
out as soon as convenient. but someplace like the library rack where people
can choose to take 'em, that's good.

Well, it wasn't like I was passing them out to total strangers on the
street. Everyone there either had a computer or were interested in
computers. Furthermore, I did qualify people a bit. I first asked
them if they had a modem. And a lot of people refused them when they
found out it was a long-distance call.

Well, I guess your campaign at the JCC sale worked on me, 'cuz here I am, and I
would like to talk to one of the guys who was staffing that booth, because I
was wondering if they were still selling a copy of the AUniversal Military
Simulator for mac. Thank you.

On the GEnie list? Has anyone gotten the new Pubnix listing yet? Are
we on there? I emailed the guy it said to email, but I never got a response.

The choice of "paper direct" paper for some of the fliers was wonderful.

I just got a copy of Boardwatch--it's a big fat glossy basde in CO. The
Listing of Bulletin Boards is 4 pages of fine print--one line per board.
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be worth the money, since we'd be lost among
the specialty boards--support for XXXXX software--Shareware download!
That sort of thing--they also take display ads--the prices range from $150
for a single insertion of a B&W business card sized ad to $3000 for a two
page full colour ad. (Both single insertions) I think that's way out of our
league.

Perhaps when we have internet access--like *free* LD lines or something
it'll be worth while--since people in CO will be able to become regular
users...butI suggest we hold off.

I think there aren't too many places where you can do the free telnetting.
A few Michigan towns are among the fortunate places.

Is there a list of them anywhere?

I posted the following to alt.bbs.ads:

Grex, a public-access UNIX system in Ann Arbor, MI recently
completed its first year of operation. Now, we'd like to invite
you to join us. An account on Grex costs you nothing. Simply
type "newuser" at the login: prompt.

Why do we do this? Well, we hope that once you become a regular
user of Grex you will want to become a member. Membership is
$6/month or $60/year.

One benefit of becoming a member is that you have a vote in how
the system is run. Grex is run cooperatively by its members.
Members elect a Board of Directors, who take care of the
day-to-day operation of the system, but all important matters are
voted on by the membership.

We also offer:
    5 phone lines,
    internet mail to all users,
read access to Usenet News to all users (we don't have a full
feed, but we're working on it)
post access to Usenet for members,
    UNIX games, and
conferencing (including science fiction, cooking, writing,
nature and a bunch of other conferences)

To access Grex, set your comm parameters to 2400, 1200, or 300
baud, 7 data bits, even parity, and 1 stop bit (2400, E71). Our
phone number is (313) 761-3000.

See you on-line!

Nice, but is anyone considering that each new user will use about 100K
disk space, and we are simply short of it. Are we planning to have more
disk?
power
response 20 of 67: Mark Unseen   Aug 6 04:02 UTC 1992

There was something going around coop about us having a couple of disks
being tested... I would think that if they are running on another system
they would be throughly tested by now, but I guess not... there was also
some question of how much they would raise our electricity bills. Still,
does anyone know when that's going on?
danr
response 21 of 67: Mark Unseen   Aug 6 11:55 UTC 1992

We should have more disk on-line real soon now.

re #18: Thanks. That's one thing you learn writing and editing
for a living.

On December 23rd Dan and Russ will be taping a public service announcement
to be aired on local television starting around New Years Day and running
once or twice a day for 7 days. It will air on channel 9 on a program
called Soap Box. Tune in to admire our very own GREX TV stars!

(Thanks, guys.) Thank you also to the others who volunteered. I'll be
getting back to you as the resonse from this spot dies out some. ;)

I think it might be a good idea to discuss here some of the things we'd
like to see them mention in their 5 minutes of fame.
