These are cool people I hang out with both online and face-to-face.

South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin is a great film and music festival.

Next year's particulars:

SXSW this year is March 7-16. The film and interactive starts Friday
(3-7) and runs til Tuesday (3-11); the music portion runs from wednesday
through the second sunday.

There's definitely an "art" to attending SXSW music shows. Unless you've
got special tricks up your sleeve, your best bet is to buy a badge,
which gets you priority access to all the shows. Even with that, you
should arrive early, because as the headliner gets closer the bars get
fuller. You can also get a wristband, but those are kind of lame, as you
don't get access until all badgeholders in line have been admitted, and
then you get whatever space is left over. If you don't have either one,
most places will allow you to pay an exorbitant cover charge, but you
have to get there a few hours before the main act if you want to get in.

Your other option is to volunteer to work the festival--by working a
certain number of hours you can earn a wristband or badge to use when
you're not working.
