Converting 8mm movies to video Mark Unseen   Dec 29 15:33 UTC 1995

I've got some old 8mm (color, silent) movies to convert to video. I'd like
a PAL version too. I've also got a small number of old glass 35mm slides (the
kind where the 35mm film is sandwiched between two pieces of glass) to convert
to prints.

Can anyone recommend a good place to have this done?

Lots of places will do this for you, if you want to pay for it. But for under
$100 (I've seen some as low as $40) you can buy a box with a prism which can
take your video camera and you can shoot your film and slides into it yourself
to make the transfer. Some of them even have a simple sound mixer so you can
add music or voice-over at the same time.

What kind of prices for having it done?

As an alternative, how good is the quality of the DIY approach, and also where
could I get a copy in PAL made?
